Louis Nazaire Bégin, Archibishop ot Quebec, who re- cently had ths Sacred Pallium conferred apon him in his gor- geous basilica with so much pomp and grandeur, is one of the humblest and most levable members ef the Canadian Epis- copate, although than he thera is none mote deeply versed in th: sacred sciences. He is al:0 the most proficient linguist sa mong the Bishops, speaking all the tongues of the Latin nations and German and English with proficiency. Mgr. Begin was professor of Dogmatic Theolegy at Laval for many years, and his lectures and addresses on Holy Scripture are still regard- ed as admirable. He has written in French several hooks of great value to religion ; that entitled ‘The Bible as the Rule of Faith” being best known to English readers as it was early turned into our language by ths late gitted Mrs. l'enny. Rome long since dis overed Mgr. Begin's superior talents and high character, and al- though he wished to remain in his dear Chicoutimi, the See for which he was consecrated, the late Cardinal and the people of Quebec and Rome herself had long regaried him asthe oniy possible future incumbent of the primatial See of Canada.
