Disastrous Conflagration at Rat Portage. Winnirea, Dee. 18, The most disastrous conflagration that has yet visited Rat Portage occurred there on Sunday night about half-past eleven. The total loss will foot up one million dollars or more. Seventy-five people will be rendered homeless. The origin of the | fire is attribeted to the explosion of a lamp pin a bake shop.

Joe Poole Executed.

The execution of Poole took place at 8.05 o'clock this morning. Poole slept well last night and had a light breakfast this morning. Souris Notes.

Three or four Nova Scotia schooners, one American, are loading potatoes and oats for the Halifax and St. John markets The shippers are Mathew McLean & Co., and Macdonald, Macdonald & Co.

The bark ‘Isobel’ is wind-bound here during the past ten days. She has about 30,000 bushels of oats for the French market. Some difficulty was experienced in getting a crew to man her. Some as soon as articled left nothing but old rags to mark the place where they had once slum bered. Notwithstanding the fact that three able-bodied men were keeping vigil, two of the A. B’s(?) managed to show a clean pair of heels.

Trains alone acknowledge Standard Time in this part of the Province. Town and country generally are hostile to the change. The old time will be adhered to as usual becanse little sympathy is felt for the adoption of the new.

Mr. Fletcher, Secretary of the British American Bible and Tract Society, and successor to the late A. N. Archibald, is here in the interests of the Institution he represents.
