She was Artless and She was Kind.
He was a married man, blessed—or the opposite, as the reader may deter mine—with an extremely jealous wife. One evening not long ago he seized a chance opportunity todo escort to a charming miss of sweet sixteen, whose blue eyes and dark drooping lashes ex ercised a glamour over every man who happened to come within range of their charm. At last ber home was reached, and as they paused at the gate the maiden turned her lovely orbs full upon him and said :

Very likely the unsophisticated maiden misunderstood the motive of his remark, for she quickly answered,in a reassuring tone :

We are all of us workers in one way or another, but how many of us are possessed with an earnest desire that the work we put forth from our hands shall be a thorough, honest, faithful performance that shall fulfill its pur- pose end withstand the ravages of time!’ The great difference in labor is, not in what is done—not in the kind of work we perform, but in the spirit we put into it. From the cleansing of a room to the purification of a government, from the clearing ot a forest to the chiseling ef a statue,from the humblest work of the hands to the nobelest work of heart and brain, it is the determina- tion to make it of the best quality that places it in the front rank. The work that is performed only for the sake of what it will bring, not for what it is to carry forth,is like cloth of shoddy, which may please the eye, but will not wear. Itis cheap, flimsy stuff, woven with no nobler purpose that to hold together long enough to be bound and paid for.

A Peculiar Case.
Dr. Fordyce was a man of convivial habits and much addicted to the bottle. He was one evening called away from a drinking bout to see a lady of title, who was supposed to have been taken suddenly ill. Arrived at the apartment of his patient, the doctor seated himself by her side, and having listened to a recital of a train of symptoms which appeared rather anomalous,be proceed- ed to examine her pulse. He tried to reckon the number of beats, but the more he endeavored to do _ this the more his brain whirled, and the less was his self-control, Conscious of the cause of his dilemma, and in a moment of irritation, he blurted out, “Drunk,by Jove !” The lady heard the remark, but remained silent, and the doctor, pre- scribing a mild remedy, took his leave. Early next morning he was aroused by a somewhat imperative message from his patient of the evening before to attend her immediately, and at once concluded that the object of this sum mons was to inveigh against him for the state in which he had visited her on the previous occasion, or perhaps for —hav- ing prescribed too potent a medicine. Ill at ease from the thoughts, he enter- ed the room prepared for a severe re- primand. The patient began, however, by thanking him for his attention,end said that she had been struck by his discern- ment on the previous evening, confess- ing that she was sometimes addicted to indulge in strong drink, and concluded by saying that the object of this early message was to obtain his promise of inviolable secrecy as to the condition in which hefound her. “You may depend ou me.” said Dr. Fordyce, whose face hud never changed since the comménce- ment of the patient’s story, “I will be ds silent as the grave.”
