Of these, Halifax takes two; Nort one—changing 42 - majority of 202 at the general election : « Government majority of 160; Sout Victoria, one—with a Covernment majority increased from 25 to 100. East Middle- sex one—with a Government majority increased from 155 to 483; East Simcoe, one—changing an Opposition majority of 114 into a Government majority of 13. Ta Peel only has there been an Opposition gain, aud it amounts to but 58 votes.

Circumstances in Peel.and Halifax were in favor of the Opposition. Mr. Feather- stoue, the Opposition candidate for Peel, was particularly popular on account of the practi- cal servicea be has rendered the cattle trade between Canada and Great Britain; and he was, on that account, supported by many Conservative voters. As to Halifax, tne changes recently made in the voters lists were known to be largely favorable to the Opposition, and the whole force and power of the Grit Government of Nova Scotia were, this time, concentrated upon this county iu a mighty effort to defeat Kenny and Stairs and elect Jones and Farrel. Under these changed conditions it is not very surprising that the Opposi- tion expressed themselves, up to the last moment, as confident of victory, and that they suceeeded in reducing the Cunserva- tives’ former splendid msjority to one which is yet overwhelmingly large.

Of these the Liberal Conservatives have taken from the Opposition four seats, and she Grits have taken from the Government one seat,— which was not, however, filled during last session.

Besides these, the seat for Queen’s, N. B., is vacated by a supporter of the Op- position and will be filled by a supporter of the Government.

Altogether the Government majority bas been increased by ten seats as a result of the campsign of election petitions opened by the Opposition.

Can it Be?

Tue Toronto Globe’s defence of Mr. Thomas MeGreevy is exciting attention and comment throughout Canada. A few months ago, the abundant resources of the English language were taxed to the utmost extent by the Globe for wordsand terms and phrases in which to denounce “‘the chara- pion Tory boodler.”" But on Saturday last it contained a leaded article, adorned by fac-simile letters, from » mythical corras- pondent in Montreal, in the course of which it is said,-—

** As a business man he (Mr. Thomas Mc- Greevy) has enjoyed, and, in spite of what has happened, continues to enjoy the con. fidence and respect of business men. I would take his word or his note for any amount, He was a member of the Municipal Council of Quebec for six or sevon years prior to confed- eration and straightened things out for the city. Had all the municipal representatives of Quebec been like him, the city would have have been spared a reign of fraud and jobbery which culminated in the wholesale vribery of councillors and newspapers when the contract for the water works was let. McGreevy was a member of the Legislative Couneil] of Quebec from 1867 to 1874. He was returned to the Ottawa Par- liament in 1867 for Quebec West, and his represented that constituency uninterruptedly ever since. I have met him under all manner of circumstances, and ani persuaded that gross injustice has been done to him [| am not concerned to defend him: where he has done wrong in order to serve the inter- ests of his party; but I do think it time that those of us who are able to do go should speak » word in his behalf, so that the public may be in a position to jadge between him and his accusers. Sir John Thompson is going to try McGreevy and Nicholas K. Connolly for couspiracy at the Ottawa Assizes, though the offence is said to have been committed in the city of Quebec. If they were tried at Quebec, where the facts are known,they would be sequitted at once. He hopes to get them convicted by the Orangemen of Carleton, they being Irish-Catholics; for a conviction would suit his political ends. I doubt, how.

ever, if the Carleton Orangemen or any other jery in Canada will convict when the whole truth is laid before them,” etc.

Rey. Principal Grant has written a letter strongly supporting the candidature of Mr. W. Harty in Kingston for the Oatario Legislature. Mr. Harty is a Roman Catholic ; an’ Principal Grant is the most prominent Presbyterian in the county,

Heartz is Trump.

One year ago, we noticed with pleasure that Mr. John Heartz of 2720 Marion street, Denver, Col., had been elected President of the Bricklayers and Masons Iaternatiowal Union, then held in ‘loronto, Canada; and on January 5th, 1892, Mr. Heartz left Denver to attend the annual conventivn held in Indianapolis, Ind., and was re-elected to the presidency by acclamation. The fact of bis being re-elected in the above manner, proves that his work during 1891 has been highly appreciated by the organiaation.

Mr. Heartz is a son of Mr. Charles Heartz, of Charlottetown, but has been a resident of Denver for the past twelve years,

Fire at Marcate —The Summerside Farmer says: Mr. William Cardwell, of Margate, met with a considerable loss early last Saturday morning, in the burning of his farm buildings. This was a piggery, workshop and woudLoase combined. There had been a fire in the farmers’ boiler the previous day but at night his father waa in the building at ten o’clock and there was no sign of fire. At about four o'clock next morning old Mr. Caldwell was awakened by a light and it was discovered that this building was on fire. When noticed the fire had gained so much headway that the roof was falling in. How the fire occurred it is dificult to surmise as the building was only three years old and everything was tight and svund. Four pigs worth at least 850 were burned, also carpenters’ tocls worth $100, from $15 to $20 worth of firewood, the boiler worth $14 and a great many small articles such as are usually stored in a farm building of this sort. At & low estimate the loss is between $300 and $400. Mr. Caldwell has insurance to che anount of $100.

Yesterday the great premier province of the Dominion did noble work, and the Conservative Party may well rest upon its magnificantly won laurels for a few days at least, The Guvernment cerried

In straight Eoglish, this means that the party of good government has more than held ita own in the constit 1encies wen at the general election, and redeemed two seats, viz : Nurth Victoria and East Bruce, At the general election East Bruce return- ed Mr. Truax, (Grit), by 114 of « msj -rity ; yesterday this gentiemau t-ied conclus ons with the same candidate, Henry Gargill, and the latter is elected by 13. The great- est victory, however, is in North Victoria, where, a year ago, Mr. Barron (Grit,) car- ried the County by 202 votes, and yesterday was defeated by Mr. Hughes by 150 majority. In South Victoria Charles Fairbairn has increased his majority from 25 to over 100, and Mr. Marshall's majority of 155 in March last in East Middessex, has been raised u to the splendid majority of 483 At the general elsctiqn, Featheratose (grit) was elected in Peel by 54,and th: same gentleman has increased his majority to 112.

There was eyen more enthi siasm in Toronto last evening than at the general election, and the tremendons cheers which went up from the thousands in front of the news- paper offices when the news of Kenny and Stairs’ victory in Halifax arrived were re- peated again and again.

The constituencea that yoted yesterday are overwhelmingly agricultural, except Halifax, None can dery but that Mr. Laurier and Unrestricted Reciprocity have received their death-blow. The procession, however, will be continued in Kast Elgin to-day,

A house was broken into, and the people driven froia their homes, Governor Loury has ordered troops to the scene, and Secretary Noble has been wired the condition of affairs. Groat excitement prevails.

MonTREAL, Feb. 10. — The Quebec Chronicle of yesterday referring to the Baie Des Chaleur’s commissioun says: There is no longer any doubt that there aie two reporta and both are now in the possession of Lieut. Governor Angers Judges Baby and Davidson are still here, Their report aas been snub. mitted to the government. We are in a position, however, to say that there is but an exceedingly slight difference between the two reports. both of which concur in the guilt of those imp'icated in the Baie des Chaleurs railway scandal.
