One of the most interesting meetings of the Salvation Army which the writer has been privileged to attend in Charlottetown, was held in the Market Hail last night, ac- cording to previous announcement. The writer could but wish that the whole of Charlotietown had been present to listen to the intelligent, burning words that fell from the lips of these trophies of Divine grace, won from amid the teeming millivns of India by the instrumentality of the much-despised Salvation Army. An an- swer to the question which springs from some quarters: Does the S. A. do any good ? was overwhelmingly given by men and women in our midst, who but a short time ago were bond slaves to heathenish custom and practice, worshippers of dumb idols. One can but faintly allude to the interesting details of this wonderful meet- ing. Staff-Capt. Leeds, an English lady who gave up her life about a year ago to mission toil in heathen India, on Salvation Army lines, dressing as the natives and living as they do, pleaded forcefully and eloquently the claims of the benighted ones. No one can see and hear this noble woman without being involuntarily drawn to admire her self-sacrificing spirit, and praise God for raising up an organization willing to make such an abandon of ease and comfort. Major Musa Bai, a real native, talented in every sense of the word—speaking four languages —is a person who immediately attracts attention. A face, denoting intelligence of a high order, which not a whit disappoints when he rises to speak ; 8 voice in tone and pronouncia- tion most pleasing, his testimony to the power of the Gospel, over his head, heart and life, as it was backed up by the devot- ed lives of the people, whose spiritual child

Emperor William attended the unveiling of the monument erected in memory of the late Prince Frederick Charles, at Frankfort on Thursday. The Recent Rain Storm. THE GREAT DAMAGE DONE 'N MANY STATES.

Tue terrific rain storn of Wednesday last did great damage in many parts of the United States. ;

A Pittsburg despatch of the 23rd says: The rain in this city yesterary amounted to 3.47 inches. The rivers are rising, and railway travel is impeded, a numbor of trains being hemmed in in various places. All telegraphic communicaiion is seriously interrupted.

At Uniontown, Pa., houses, shops, coal mines and railroads are fluoded. The loss to crops and other property will be very heavy.

The water in Triadelphia, Elm Grove and Leatherwood is three feet hgher than last month, and the damage to property is very extensive. The Baltimoreand Ohio depot has been closed to the public, and is ex- pected to fall into the creek.

Similar reports of great damage at Wash- ington, Pa., and Steubenville, O., have been received,

A Chatanooga despatch says: A terrific storm raged here yesterday The water feli in torrents, and the wind blew down a large lot of timber on Lookout Mountain. Several land slides are reported on the different railroads, and as a result al! the trains are delayed.

Reports of the storm from the southern portion of Maryland are coming in very slowly, but it is known that the damage has been very severe. The cyclone struck the village of Still Pond, Kent Co., with particular severity. Houses were blown down, and 10 people are said tu have been killed. There is no telegraphic communi- cation, and the reports are mostly received from steamers arriving from points along the bay.

An Easton (Pa.) despatch says the rains were very heavy and great damage has been Cone to country roads and foundations of new buildings. The Lehigh river is over the tow path. Canal navigation is closed and the mills in South Easton have shut down.

The Delaware river has risen six feet, and is backing water into the Bushkill, pre- venting mills on that stream from running. All rivers are rising rapidly.

Raccoon creek, which flows through the central portion of Burgettstown, on the Pan Handle road, leaped over its boundaries last night, and as « result the whole lower portion of the town was submerged. Gar- dens were destroyed, and drift wood and the increasing volume of water placed many houses in imminent peril. Reports from the adjoining districts state that the valleys are all overflowed, and the damage to crops can searcely be estimated. Bridges, stables ana outbuildings were whirled away before the rushing flood, and the scene this morn- ing 1s one of great devastation.

At McKeesport the flats are under water, and several mills have been compelled to suspend operatiuns. The ice pond on the hill burst, and the flood swept down Whire’s Hollow, overturning two houses on Fifth avenue. The inmates fortunately escaped. ‘n [talian laborer was in the Long Run culvert when it went down, and was drowned.

At Jeannette, where the Sellers-McKee glass works are being erected and have just gone into operation, two-thirds of the plant is under water, and it is reportéd that 80 of the houses belonging to the Western Land and Jraprovement Company are under water. A boarding house, near the glass

works, is reported floating down the Rush | creek, and inany Italians had to swim out! to save their lives.

The towns of Larimer, Shafton, Irwin, Penn and Manor are partially under water, ! and many of the inhabitants are living in | the upper stories of their houses.

In Pittsburg city the water got up into the fly pits of many of the mills and fac- tories, and caused a suspension of work. The Polish inhabitants of Shantytown were again compelled to remove their goods and are now encamped on the banks of the river. The railroads are the greatest suffer- ers in this section. No trains have arrived ; or departed over the Baltimore & Ohio | since yesterday morning. At Osceola sta- tion, on the easfern division, they have seven acres of land slide, while every bridge and culvert ou the Wheeling division has been washed away.

A terrible cyclone or waterspout, or a combination of both,wrought terrible havoc in the vicinity of Wilmington, Del., about 5.45 o'clock Tuesday evening. At least $69,000 worth of property must have been destroyed m this vicinity. Five persons are known to have been killed and several seriously wounded, while a large number were more or less injured.

the depth of water being from 12 tu 18) inches. ‘Train service was interrupted on — the Boston & Albany and New York &' New Englanc lines. At Messrs. Rand, Avery & Co.’s nearly two feet of water was in their three cellars, coyerig a little more than half an acre of surface. The fires ip the boilers were put out. This cost them half a day’s work, as the establishment was closed until next noon. There was stored in these cellars the paper stock of their customers, Which included nearly all the Boston publishers and many New York concerns. The loss to them miy be $12,000 to $15,000.

A Pittsburg despatch of the 23rd has the following; The water reached the highest point, 26 feet 2 inches, at 3 o'clock yester- day, and now is slow}y receding. Hailpoad traflic is still paralyzed and it will be several days before business is resumed. The postal service is terribly demoralized, no mails having been received from the east since Tuesday night. The washout on the Pennsylvauia road is the greatest in the history of the company. It is impossible to give a correct estimate of the lussto the railroads and property owners by the storm, but it is safe to gay it will net fall short of one million dollars. Four deaths are reported.
