McLeod, Prim died the 13th inst.. a the age of 75 years. He was appointed 'o his present position bv the late Hon. J C. Pope, on June 3, 1868, and held it up to his death on Friday Jast.

Mr. McLeod was a@ man of good moral ard religious character, a strong and faithful! believer in the Establixhed Chureh of Scotland, and a kind husband. He leaves behind bim a widow, four daughters and two sons, the younger, Samuel, has charge of the lighthouse at present.

| The Christianized Esquimanx north of Hudson Bay bui't a church, and as there was no wood available they used whale ribs for rafters and covered them with the tan hides of the walrus. The edifice would seat about one hundred people and was used Sunday after Sunday for divine wor- ship. Photographs were even taken of the church and sent to missionary publications in London, showing the ingenious device of building a church without wood. All went well until the advent of the intenslv cold winter, and then ho-tea of tamish<d | dogs promptly attacked the church and eat up,

For tuz Nortuwest.—The I. C. R. depot presenied a lively scene last evening when about three hundred able bodied men left for Manitoba and the Northwest on @ special train. For some time the C. ;P. R. have been advertising a cheap | barvest excursion, and when the regular } express for Montreal arrived here last evening some two hours Jate, there were on board some two hundred farm lavorers bound for the Northwest. Ten extra care came io and were detached here. The regular train was sent out shortly after- wards, and about 7.30 o’clock a special with the puiduiatoai- -ts including fully seventy-five from P. E. I, as well aa the large number from Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, and the hundred or more from this district, left for the west. The party will be rushed through in the quickest possible time. The special was made up of twelve cars, eleven passenger and one baggage.
