Information was received here yesterday, that the American Uumsnc Education socivt had awarded the prize of 8250 to Mr. John A. McPhsil, B. A., for his essay on vivisoction. There were nineteen essays submitted in competition by writers in America and England and the committee which made the award was formed from the professors of Harvard university. This society is in aflilistion with the Ma!- sachusetts S -ciety for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and to obtain the results of modern scientific thought on the question of vivisdcfion offered the sum of $500, one-half for-‘sn essay stating the arguments in favor of the prsctice, and the other half for 3 state- ment of the easy against it. M r. MscPl1sil’s essay set forth the rcssona why no legi-lotion should be introduced forbidding it, and gun the regulstions under which he considered vivisoction should be conducted so ss not to lay undue restrictions upon scientific resesrch or inflict unjust injuries upon the lower animals. The essay will shortly be published by the society in book form sud has been copyrighted under thr- new American set. The results sinned at are intended to guide the society in this action upon this question, as it was for this reason the prizes were swarded.
