{HE GREAT RACE, TO-DAY. Won by Hanian.
Tue great single-scull contest between Elliott, the champion of England, and Hanlan, the champion of America, took place on the Tyne, to-day. The weather
on the Tyne, for the past few days, has been rainy, but the water was in fairly good condition. A despatch says that, on Thurs. day forenoon, Hanlan pulled a good seven miles, doing two and a-half at racing speed, and maintaining, almost throughout the whole journey, the fast stroke, for him, of 35 to the minute. Elliott rowed five miles—half of the distance striking 34 te the minute. The English champion is pulling a much longer stroke than he was went io do previous to training for the
present match. Hanlan was out again in the afternoon, and put in another five miles at moderate rate of speed.
Elliett did not show up a_ second time. It is said that the latter has been tried, and travelled the course in faster time than it has ever been dene be- fore. His supporters appeared to have gain- ed renewed confidence in his abilities, but still they stuck out for 10 to 4 against him. Several bets were made during the week at 90 to 40 on Hanlan, but en Saturday no business could be done at a better figure than 5 to 2, and offers at the former rate went begging.
Some renng spinon prevail in Eng- land respecting Hanlan’s rowing and his beat. That is they prevail among certain classes. One writer describes as a con- temptible craze the opinion that there is in the boat some kind of an engine which propels it. Then there are others who think that either gas or compressed air is used to aid the Canadian sculler. The cor- respondent of the Toronto Mail declares that James Taylor has taken so vigorously to this gas theory that he has been ex- perimenting with a model racing boat fitted with with an inflating apperatus. Of course the gas made the boat more buoyant

Yesterday evening was dark and sultry, and frequent flashes of tightning lit up the city, only to make the gloom which fol- lowed appear more intense. About 10 o’clock a strange, deep rumbling, with a simultaneous shudder of the earth, startled
the residents in many portions of the city. ‘* Was that thunder?” was the question asked in many households, and many rushed te their doors to find that the thunder- clouds were far away. The shock was over too quickly to cause any very great alarm, and was too suucen for the ordinary ob- server to study the strangs sonsation very closely. Several describe it as like the neise caused by a heavy cart, but to the writer it seemed like the shock and momen- tary vibratien from something heavy having fallen. The motion was quite perceptible, and the noise appeared more like that of pounding than rolling. Many persons | were nearly shaken out of their chairs, and the foundatiuns of several buildings were tested hy the rocking of the upper stories. A gentleman who was sitting alone in his library on Drummend street thus describes it :—The sound commenced by a rumble in the direction of the front windews (seuth- west), and appeared to be coming towards him. In about two minutes there was a jolt, with a sharp sound like a shot imme- diately under him, after whieh the sound continued about fifteen seconds, rumbling off to the north-east. The sound was like the rolling of a ball in a bowling alley, only very much more prolonged, and the shock was negr the begiuning of its progress in- stead of at the end. 5 The captain of a steamship in port says he felt a slight vibration while on board his vessel, but imagined that the commotion | had been caused by a “‘swell’” from a tug-) boat which had passed some tim - »reviously. Sin, —A further case of ‘Grit injustice” oc- eurred at the Ra‘tway this morning, by the summary dismissal ot Mr. Joseph Kennedy, who is considered the most competent fitter on the staff. ‘dhe cause which led to Mr. Kennedy’s dismissal is, in brief as follows : Since his engagement on the railway—which occurred upon the opening of the road—Mr. has been most assiduous in the discharge of his duties, and. his competency has not been for one moment questioned tecently, how- ever, Mr. McFarlane (who, by accident oc- cupies a supposed prominent position) con- sidered that he could, at his beck, compel Mr. Kennedy to perform any menial work about the Round House, and allotted certain jobs to him which Mr. Kennedy very properly re- fused doing, maintaining that he was employed by the department as a fitter and not as For this offence (7) our Grit over-

DesBrisay Esq., Spring Park, a vicous dog at- tacked him and inflected a very dangers wound on his right arm. Without delay the injured member was bandaged, and we were gratified to see our genial friend this morning in his usual place in the Provincial Building. The arm is yet very’painful but will, we trast, be ‘itself again” in a few days.

Tue wife of Mr. Michael Daly died very suddenly at her residence, yesterday, at half- past two o’clock. Mrs, Daly had been suffer- ing from the effects of a paralytic stroke for the past two years. She was, previous to her death, moving about the house quite lively. Her daughter had left her sitting on a chair in a room, and on herveturn—in a very few minutes—found her with her head bent to- wards the floor, almost lifeless. Medical aid was summoned, but, as she had received a stroke of paralysis of the heart, death followed instantaneously,
