That greatest ierror of war, a starv- ing garrison and a starving town, sur- rounded by a ho’ ile camp, yet able to s‘e far-off fields of grain and plenty, could not be regeated in this age of canned goods, meats, vegetables, pud- dings and fruits all incased in tiny jars or boxes of tin.

It used to be easy to beleagure a city and starve it into submission with hardly an ounce of shot, for it Was @ foregone conclusio: that if all avenues of food supply w re shut off only % few weeks woulu elapse before both garrison and citiz+ns would have to capitulate, thoug!. they might eat rat- flesh and horsefesh first. But now, so cleverly are provisions compresged ard packed away ‘ato tins, and so long will even the fo_as that most usually spoil quickly kee,—for years in most cuses—that no city or town could be starved out if it only had half a chance

Canned goods, though, have proved themselves of the sreatest value to the traveler from th> fact that an enor- mous amount of i0urishment can be carried in an ex _eedingly small con- pass. The Arctic explorers first found out the value of 2: nned meats and veg- ctables, and in t'is way were able to travel with hardship and to do things which wou:d have been impcs- sible had it been :ecessary for them to depend upon fooc in its original form.

When the Gre ly expedition went away in 1881 a la [je quantity of pem- mican was put on board. A large part of it was not consumed on the trip, and on the return of the explorers it was sent back to the firm from which it was bought. When the Peary exfe- dition was being fitted out, ten years later, and the same firm was doing the providing, they opened sample cages of this pemmican and found it to be in as good conditi.n as if fresh made. So it was sent out with Peary, and.on that explorer’s return to New York what was left proved to be as good and as nourishing as i’ had been in 188L

No expedition of recent date has plunged into the Dark Continent with- out being well equipped with tin boxes of all sizes and varieties. It is said that there is no Gesert plateau in any part of the earth where one is not liable to run across an empty beef can.

Transatlantic steamers and sailing vessels about to sturt out on long vcy- ages use these goods in great quanti- ties, because they keep so well and because they can be stored so easily. When prepared by a skillful cook it is impossible for the diner to distinguish between fresh meats and vegetables and those that are canned.

In canning th- meat is steamed, boned and pres.ed into the boxes, which are then suvldered up. It is es- timated that a two-pound can of meat, seld at about 25 cents, contains as much nourishment as 50 cents’ worth of meat fresh from the butcher.

The Presidential Succession.

I have told you of the Spaniard offices have never in our history both become vacant during a _ presidential term. Several prcsidents have died in office—Harrison, Tyler, Lincoln and Garfield, but the vice-president took up the office and survived the term. Vice- Presidents Clinten, Gerry, King, W#- son and Hendricks have died in office, John C. Calhoun resigned to becorne Senator from South Carolina. In 1286 a new statue was passed by Congress changing the succession, and now in the event of the death or removal of both the presiden. and vice-president, the succession develves upon the metn- bers of the Cabinet in the following order: Secretary of State, Secretary of the Treasury, Secretary of War, Attor- ney-General, Postmaster-General, Sec- retary of the Navy, Secretary of the Interior.—Ex-Pres.dent Harrison in La- dies’ Home Jouraal.

The snowdrop means consolation; the primrose, youthful sunshine; the violet, modesty; the daisy, innocence; the hawthorn, hope; the wild rose, sirm- plicity; the lily, purity; the poppy, the comfort of sleep; the convolvulus, con- tentment; hops, aspiration; the chrys- anthemum, cheerfulness; holly, foie- sight and protection.
