The newspapers are full of Russia's achievement in launch- mg a satellite and in sending it spinning around the earth. Ob- servers in all countries are watching its movements, calcu- lating its speed. and trying to learn the lessons it is teaching about the space through which our world is moving.

All sorts of inferences are be- ing drawn from this initial suc- ress.

For instance. it is man's first venture into space; it is the first «top in interplanetary travel; man's next endeavor will be to
