Famed Santa Clara and its Scenery

‘There are many varieties ef wild flow- » California, and they are very beautiful. I sball not soon forget a drive on the first of May, to the mountains, some eight or nine years ago.

‘d be mou: tain slopes with cultivated foot hills, showrd various shades of green. [on some places you could notice fruit trees planted in ‘rderly fashion on the slopes. Then, again, fields of grain, the mountais ridges makir g material divisions between pretty culti:ated patches. As you ascend the winding road and look backon the beautiful scenery, you could say it was beautifully named “Buena Vesta,” or Beautiful View, the valley below reach- ing out for miles, with its thousands of acres of fruit trees or grain; beautiful homes dotting the whole outlook, and here and tl ere cluatered in a village, town or City.

You have to see it to fully enjoy it, and see it also in its first full glory of luxuri- ant spring blossom, and leafage; after the early and later rains have had their mission accomplished.

Here for months in summer we have no rain, and the hills grow very brown and sombre looking. In summer evenings our somtre hills can take on quite 4 transformation ecene when a purplish haze envelopes them, aad lo! nature has put on a reyal dress only subdued in tint and verv sheer in texture.

Now veu will want to know the name of thie mountain range. It was formerly called the missiou range in this part of C.liformia, and forms part ofthe coast range on either side of the valley. Li-+k Overrvs ory is placed upon its highest euinmit.

HOW TO GET TO CHARLOTTETOWN

The steamer Halifax leayes Boston for Coarlottetown every Saturday at noon and will be due at Charlovtetown on Monday night. Ono the following Taesday at one she will leave oo return to Boston. Haii- tax apd Port Hawkesbury are cdiled at every trip. Passengers may take the steamer atany of the por's mentioned, The Halifax will be supplemented by the Grand Duchess later ir the season.

The steamer City of Ghent plys between Halifax and Charlottetown each week, calling at several ports en route. She is due here every Thursday. he steamers Coban, Bonavista, Cam- pana, Tiber and Polino, of Montreal, also make Chailottetown a port of call.

Paseengers for this Province coming by way oi Pictou are brought to Charlottetown bv the steamer Princess. Those coming by way of Point Da Chene connect witu the steamer Northumberland, and may come through to Charlottetown by the mail especial which leaves Summerside each evening immediately after the steamer reaches that port.
