A Curtosity.—The Farmersays: Mrs. lsaac Jeffrey, of Linkletter Road, brought to this office on Monday a curiosity in the shape of a small egg which she found inside of a common duck egg. Itis only about three quarters oi ari inch in length, but is perfectiy formed, with a shell of the ordinary tmaterial.

A Goov Move.—According to the Militia Gazette, it is not at all improbable that a general efficiency competition for infantry and rifles will be a feature of next season’s drill. \ definite scheme is likely to be formulated in the near future. It will likely be some what after the style of the artillery efficiency com petition.

Timeer Burnev.—A Winnipeg despatch gays: A lumberman who has explored the whole northern region, states that the Gov- ernment has lost three million dollars in timber dues alone since 1882, and a hundred million dollars would not cover the amount of timber destroyed by fire between Lake Dauphin and Lake Winnipeg. The In- dians set the fires to drive game and signal friends.

Crry Apreat Covrt.—Two cases of appeal from the valuation of the city assessors were hefore the court this morning. In one case— that of Alexander Shaw, McEachen’s build ing, Queen Street, —the assessors’ valuation of the stock was $5,000, which, after hearing the evidence of the appellant, was reduced to $1,500, upon which amount Mr. Shaw was ordered to pay the assessment of one per cent levied. In the case of E. H. Norton & Co. an assessment if $2,000 was made upon the stock of the Christmas Bazaar Company, which has tor some time past been doing business in Char- lottetown. On the application of Mr. E. H. Norton the hearing of this case was adjourn- e1 until Monday.

Abr 4 o'clock this morning the cottage of an old man named Samuel Carlton, who lives near the marine slip, was discovered to be on fire. The neighbors broke open the door and found Cariton suffocated by the smoke. An inquest this morning indi- that the deceased retired about mid- nigh’, leaving the lamp burning on the table. It is surmised that the lamp ex- ploded as the table is much charred. The other damage from fire is slight.

Orrawa, Dec. 25. A horrible tragedy is reported from Templeton, 10 miles from here. William

Ford. whois believed to be insane, murder- ed his wife and child, and tried to kill his sister-in-law, but, failing in that, he set fire to his house, and then cut his own thront. The bodies of Mrs. Ford and child were burned in the ruins of the house.

It is reported that the dispute between England and Portugal regarding their African possessions will be submitted to Duke Ernest of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha for arbitration. The British minister here has had several interviews with Senor Gomez, Portuguese Foreign Minister, on the question at issue.
