Tue New York Herald sums up the result of the recent elections in Ohio and Indiana as follows :

‘The Western Democrats are in the con- dition of the Irishman’s pig, which ‘enjoyed miserably poor health and was getting no better very fast.” As the details of Tnes- day’s elections come in the Democratic deteat is seen to be even worse than was at first be- lieved,

‘*In Indiana the Republicans appear to have elected the Governor, they have carried eight and possibly nine Congressional districts, against only six in the present House, and they have the Legislature and will be able to elect a United States Senator this winter to aucceed Mr. McDonald, democrat. In Uhio they have carried the State by a handsomely increased majority, and have fifteen Congress. men against only nine in the present House. ‘They will also be abie to elect a United States Senater in place of General Garfield if he should become President. In two States the Repubiicans appear thus to have gaiaed eight and perhaps nine Congressional seats and one samt 1B the Senate.”

Mr. J. R. Betrorp, Agent in Canada for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, refers to the Toronto Globe's con- tradiction of Sir John McDonald’s state- ment that while in England he was con- fronted at every turn by copies of Mr. Blake's anti-Pacific Railway speech, and says: —

‘If the speech Sir John Macdonald _re- ferre to 1s the’one in which Mr. Blake honestly and justly, as 1 believe, eulogised Kansas, and of which 1 had, in part, print- ed and circulated many thousands of copies in Canada and Eurupe, I beg to say, in be- half of truth, that Sir John’s statement is correct, and that the Globe is not justified in denying it. 1 received instructions from my chief, Col. A. 8. Johnson, to send alot of the circulars to our Manchester agent, which I did, it is not hard to be- lieve that Sir John had them shoved under his nose everywhere, seeing they were dis- tributed gratuitously, and in large num-

This shows how careful leading public men should be that their Parliamentary utterances are not detrimental to the in- terests of the country unless they have the fullest assurance that What they say is found ed on-fact. It has turned out that Mr. Blake was entirely astray in his comparison of Kansas with Canada. Speaking of the emigration to Manitoba this year, Dr. Macklin, of Portage la Prairie, in Manitoba

says:

** There has been a large emigration to the Souris valley, south of the Assiniboine, this year, and also to the Tiger hills. The land along the Souris is said by judges to be equal & any in the Manitobian region. The emigrants are from England, Scotland, Canada and the United States, many having come from Kansas, whither they had been lured by railway agents and runners for land monopolies.”

On the testimsny of Mr. Belford, Mr. Blake, Leader of Her Majesty’s Opposi- tien in Canada, has been made an instru- ment of these ‘‘ railway agents and run- ners,” who have ‘‘ lured’ British emigranis to less or ruin in Kansag.

‘Tur premises of Messrs. toer & Golf, Gro- cers, Queen street, have recently been en- larged and otherwise greatly improv ed, A visit to theit establishment will suffice to con- vince one that the firm has now facilities for a grocery business, second to none in the Province. ‘he firm 18 composed of two young, energetic business men. it has, from the beginning, met with un- paralleled success ~—& fact which 1s attributed to the adoption of cash principles and liberal uivertising in the EXAMINER and other pre- tminent newspapers.

Che tirm commenced business in the year 1875, in the store now eceupied by Messrs. Robertson & Cameron, on the South side ot Queen Square. The premises, owing to a rapidly increasing patronage, became inade quate. In the year 1577, they removed to the spacious building on Queen street, oppo- site the Market House, By close attention, and spirited enterprise, they developed a

flourishing trade, which is still increas- ing, and waich is, no doubt, ma- terially assisted by the prosperity with

which Canada generally is now blessed. With the object of still more fully facilitating their already large trade, they recently extended the building which they occupy, back a dis- tauce of fifty-three feet—making it eighty feet by thirty, and three stories high. Besides this-they erected an excellent warehouse in rear of the store, which is forty feet square by two stories high. Following the example of all well conducted firms in other cities, they have divided their store into departments for the display and sale of different varieties of goods, The first departments on the ground floor facing Queen Square, is the General Retail Store, which is well stocked with al! descriptions of goods. generally found in

a first-class grocery store. Adjoining the store is a neatly fitted office from which a commanding view of all the

work done in the general store and other de- partments may be had. In the rear of the office are two spacious apartments, to which access may be obtained from the genera] store through splendidly designed arches. One is the wholesale department, which 1 stocked with saimples of al] goods to be dis posed of at wholesale, while the other is a «de- partment for the exposition and sale of heavy goods, such as sugar in barrels, rice in bags, crockery, &e., and lquids, such as molasses, vinegar aud oils. The second flat of the building is one large department for the dis- pley of biscuits, teas, and coffees —all of whch the firm are large importers—while the upper story is used as a general storeroom. ‘he new warehouse is conveniently situated in the rear of the main building. It is a substantial brick construction, and is well filled with flour, meal, tea, &c. The cellar is spacious, and is being fitted up for the receipt of over five hundred barrels of apples, which the firm intend to dispose of during the winter season. We might here state that a room is set

apart in the warehouse, and thorough- ly fitted with a new improved ccifee roaster. The firm will, in future, roast

all the coffee they intend to dispose of, and feel sure it will be satisfactory to customers, as it will be carefully roasted under their own supervisien.

We feel safe in saying that Messrs. Beer & Goff have now facilities for doing—and they do—the best grocery business m the Pro- viuce. ‘They have in their employ ten sales- men, clerks and warehousemen, and keep two teams constantly employed deiivering and storing goods. We wish them continued success, and advise readers unacquainted with the establishment to give them a call.

WE are pleased to learn that so well estab- lished and reliable a Company as the ‘* W est- ern Assurance Company,” has secured as its General Avent in this Province, one se popular and capable as Mr. Horace Haszard. The Company has commenced advertising in THe Examiner, and will doubtless do a consider- able amount of business here. !t has been operating for twenty-nine years ; and accord- ing toits ‘‘ Annual Report” itis one of the best Insurance Companies in Canada.

Mr. J. D. McLuop, of this city, writes to the Patriot, denying the statement of the St. John Globe, that the oatmeal! exhibited at the St. John Exhibition ‘‘was not of Island production.” Mr. McLeod states that the oatmeal sent by him to the kxhibition was ground from Island grown oats, at Mr. Rich- ard KE. Bagnells Miiis, New Glasgow, and he informs us that he can supply St. John editors and reporters with the same quality of meal as that exhibited, in any quantity from one pound to one ton.

THe ‘ Epizoo.” —--We learn that many horses on the Island are slightly afflicted with epizootic. A gentleman in New Bruns- wick, who takes an interest in horses, has supplied the tollowing cure for the disease :— ‘* Ground ginger pure (2) tablespoontfuls; Ger- man Condition Powder, one (1) tablespoonful ; put in a common sized teacup and fil up with molasses and mix with the horses’ oats or other fuod. Give mormng and evening until the cure is effected.”

A YouUNG man named Fulton arrived®from St. John, N. B., last week, with the inten- tion ot purchasing produce. He, as the old story gues, feil invo bad company, was robbed of a tew hundred dolJars, and after drawing several huudred from a bank disappeared from the city on Saturday. Before iis de- parture he was seen with a number of sus- picious characters, His brother arrived late on Saturday night, but up to the present has been unable to discover the whereabouts of the unwary one.
