—The nomination of candidates to fill the vacancy in the City Council, caused by the death of the lamented William Murphy—must be made to- morrow ; and the election takes place on to-morrow week. This is very quick, very sudden. But the law requires it. The residents of the Ward will, there- fore, have to bestir themselves if they desire that the vacated chair—which may be said to be yet warm—shall be tilled by a worthy successor of its late occupant.

—Dull times in England! Says Mr. Burt, M. P., “The eghip-building trade in the North is practically at a stand-still, and their probably never has been a time in its histery when the outlook for an improvement was as indefinite and uncomforting as it is at present. Whole fleets of large steamers are lying idle in ihe Tyne, and on the Wear ship-building has almost ceased to be an industry. Thousands of persons are unemployed, and the distress—actual waut of food and shelter, I mean—is fearful in the ex treme. The labor orgauizations, uu usually strong, as & ruie, in the North, are wholly unable to answer the calls upon them for relief; those few mem- bers who have managed to retain work being unable to meet the demands which are made upon them. ‘The distress in Sunderland is particularly wmarked. Many hitherto well-to-do families have had to apply to the authorities for relief.”

To make a good jam:—Place one finger in the crack of a door. Shut the door slowly, but firmly, and keep it closed for at least ten seconds. Then open the door and remove the finger, and add plenty of inter- jections. Never use your own finger if you can avoid it.

An attempt was made on the night of the 10th inst. to wreck the west bound expre:s train about one mile east of Kingston, Ont., where two ties had been placed on the track. Fortunately one of them was shunted off the track by the cow catcher and the other hoisted on in front of the engine and carried to the station. Believ- ed plunder was the object of the dastardly act.

Lieut. Ivan Campbell, the brother anc heir presumptive of the Earl «of Bradali ave and Holland, is about to be mariicd to Lady Margaret Elizabeth Diana, third danghter of the Earl of Normanton. Tle present Earl of Breadalbane was married in 1872, but the union has been childless, and the marriage of his brother is to be made partly in the hope of producing an heir in the direct line to the Bradalbane estate.

Professor Brown has made rapid progress in the execution of his commission to pur- chase, in Great Britain, highly-bred cartle and sheep for the Ontario Agricaltural Col- lege. He has succeeded in getting together one of the finest consignments of live stock that have ever left England. The collection numbers thirty-three cattle and about sixty sheep, and represents no Jess than eight breeds of the former and nine of the latter. The total cost will aproach £10,000, bu: there can be little debt that the outlay, large as it is, is a jodisious investment.

The Prince of Wales has gone to Mentone it is said, not so much for his heaith as to avoid being condoled with on the death of his lamented brother. He has heen sur- feited with conventional mourning in Ger- many, because, as one of the Prince Consort's sons, he is Duke of Saxony. At Darmstadt every lady wore a long face. A: Berlin the lugubrious ceremonial observed by nearly every one who approached him became intolerable. The Prince was thank- ful to find himself, after all this simulated woe, in a@ Republican city, where not a creature thought of presenting him with an addres.

John Nicholls, a man belonging to Cape Breton, and who lived for some time at Goldenville, Guysboro, was found on May 10th by two hunters hanging to a tree in a wood about twelve miles from Lordsburg, New Mexico. The body was in an ad- vanced state of decomposition, and had evi- dently hung there for at least ten days. From the fact that the man had been sho’ threes times and the rope around his 1 eck been broken, it is probable the parties by whom the murder was committeed made short work of their victim. It is stared that he had five hundred dollars in cash in his pockets when he left Moreneia, Arizona, about April 10th, with the intention of going to Carlisle, since which time nothing is known of his movements, and when the body was discovered no money was found upon it.

A London cablegram says the Maori King Tawahia, who has been in England a week, has astonished as well as pleased his supporters by keeping perfectly sober. He has been chaperoned to a great many of the theatres, and has developed an admiration for the ballet which is almost beyond restraint. He was conspicuous av the Alhambra, where he ogled to girls to his heart’s content. Afterwards when he had his supper at the Savage Clnb, he became so enthusiastic in a description of the wonders he had seen that he made a bold but abortive attempt to imitate a pas seul.
