AN Ottawa despatch says: Mr. Riopel, M. P., had au interview with the Government a few days ago, regarding the aid asked for to relieve the destitute fishermen in Gaspe. The Government adyance $2,000, to be supple- mented by a similar amount from the Provin- eial Government, making in all $4,000, to be divided among six hundred familiea, This advance is in the form of a loan to the mer- chants of Bonaventure and Gaspe, who will distribute it, aud who guarantee that the amount wilt be returned to the Government.

This, after a long struggle, resulted in pushing the mob into the side streets, aud thus splitting it up. Following up their work, they drove each fragment of the broken mob unti! its elements were dissipated in alleyways and by ways.

Every precaution has beeu taken to pre- vent the re-assemblage of any mob. Many of the rioters have been arrested and some have been fined and discharged, others re- manded for trial, while some have been sentenced to imprisonment for various terms rangiog from one to six months.

A Murder. Owen Sounp, Feb. 9.

A quarrel took place last night in a shanty of a negro named Jodnson, which led to the death of one of the parties, Phil. Royand and Jce Smoots, young negroes, Kwent to the house, and when Johnson returned he found Roy and Smoois, Angry words followed, when Roy attacked Smoots, but was knocked down. Roy got up and went out of the door saying that Smoots would die for this. The latter followed, when Roy turned and stabbed him. Smoots died in a _ few minutes.
