\ MAN'S SKULL. 4 Kingston, Ont., despatch of the Sth says :—A peculiarly sad accident occurred at the Foxton mines, Sydenham, yesterday afternoon, about four o'clock, Dennis Mooney, who was in charge of one of the steam drills, and was working fully 150 feet below the surface, had occasion to send to the blacksmith shop, which is situ- ated near the mouth of the mine, several drills which required to be sharpened. The means of transport for these drills was a rude bucket which w as drawn to the sur- face by means of a smal) steam hoist. Yes- terday, according to custom, Mooney pli wed the drills in this bucket and gave the order to hoist. This was done, and if proper care had been exercised all would have been well, but through carelessness on the part of one of the attendants, the bucket, when almost at the surface, gave a sudden lurch. The result was that one of the drills, about five feet in length, slipped from its fastenings, and like a rocket went whizzing endwise down the opening and struck poor Mooney in the head, cating through his hat, then through his skull and wedging itself solidly in his head, one end protruding through his mouth. The un- fortunate man was immediately conveyed to a neighboring house and medical aid sum- moned, but all in vain, for never recovering consciousness M many shortly afterwards passed away. PoNsoney” To this Secretary Tracey sent the following reply : **Mr. Tracey begs the British Minister to convey to Her Majesty his sincere thanks for the gracious message of sympathy. In reply to her kind inquiry he begs to say that the surviving daughter and grand-daughter are out of danger.”
