This is how thomas W, Baker, of the 2nd Kings Royal Rifles, writes to his friends at Rye, Sussex: “We have done the Boers a lot of harm at Mooi river, Willow Grange, and Estcourt. We gave them a good thrashing yester- day, the 29th, and they fired over 200 shells. A piece hit my water—bottle and knocked it concertina shape. I was lucky: it saved my life, did the water-bottle. “On Wednesday afternoon we went seven miles. We got wet through. Then it began to thunder and lighten, and then to hail. The hailstones were as large as marbles. We were shelled as we got there, but it was nearly dark and they had to stop. Were up a hill opposite the Boers all night. In the morning we went to another hill where there was a naval gun posted. They were doing good work and put one gun out of action and cleared the Boers off a lot of hills. But the Boers brought up a bigger gun than ours, and we could not touch them.”

“We have veen after the Boers again,” says the same man On 3oth No- vember, writing from Frere this time. “They soon cleared. From ‘the letter of a Royal Marine of the Powerful to his parents at Roch- dale : “We met and defeated the Boers at Belmont, after eight or nine hours fighting, on Thursday, 23rd November. We marched all Friday, rested till half half-past two on Saturday morning, 25th November, when we started marching | again, and encountered Boers at half- past eight a. m., in strong position on hills. Our Naval brigade of 230 mar- ines and 4o bluejackets had to attack the Boers’ main position on Graspan, under two cross fires. We suffered horribly. losing 112 killed and wound- and most of our officers. But we stuck to it, and carried it in a bayonet charge. General gave us great praise,”

Freemantle, a member of the corps, writes from Est— court on 24th November, to his brother at Rushelme: “At the commencement ot this week,” he says, “three of the men and myself were sent on vedette duty up the Emmersdale Road. We left before daybreak, and went along very cautiouslly until we reached a kopje just abeve Emmersdale store, where we were watching the Boers looting the store. Boer’s Bad Shooting

Again on 27th November, he writes from Frere : “All the mounted branches and a battery of artillery went out with the idea of getting into Colenso yester- day morning. The general, when we got within about three miles of

They waited until we were nicely on the open veldt (the Boeis were on a stone kopje) and then opened fire with all their guns. It was a very funy sen- sation hearing all the shells bursting so clese. A Bilious Letter

Thursday evening we dropped a bill in the Post Office for a prominent geutleman of thistown. The next morning we had the pleasure of reee pting it. This is what we call yromptness.
