| A Primitive yet Noble Souled People

—Description of the Isles.

The firat days of our sojourn in the Magdalenes were spent in exploriug All Right Island over which our guest holds api iritual 8 sway. We found it to contain a thrifty populati ou of 200 families, or aboat 1150 souls. The people are nearly all crofiers; that is to say, they cultivate small farms, while the more importact fishing

industry is not neglected. They are all within the Enghab condition then of “three acrea and acow,.” And let us say, emptaticaily, that the cow is a prime

animal, showing her Jersey extraction, and performiog at the pail in a mauner cai- culated to make the average visitor marvel exceeditgly. These cows look verv much like the Canadian Jersey, which on the

whole, Professor Robertson, our Federal) agriculturist, thinks the best cow in Canada. Oo this island the stock is

doubtlessiy the best, the cattle purer, the sheep larger and the pigs, although claim

ing none of the Tamworth, would cettainly please Mr. Lees in janki- bess and leanness. It has

been said that you would have to go tothe Magdalens to see apig on tether. We saw nore, but we were not cverly much im- pressed with Magdalen pork, for we object to bacon,—which theologically might be claimed a8 a lenten ration—like shell duck, so Strong is the smell of blubber and fish oftal on which it was raised. The porkere of the Islands want a differ- ent bandling from the present system. Agriculture, too, needs practical eucour- agement. We are sure that it could be made to flourish there more than almost anywhere else. They have a splendd

strong soil of sandy loam. The grass that grows there is thicker inthe bottom and much more luxuriant than with us, and without seeding down they grow erop after crop of this natural grass which makes an excellent fodder, Timothy aud clover grow well, too. Wesaw some especially heavy fielda at Bassoa, particularly on the paro- chial farm. Any kind of a rotation system, with attention and a knowledyg of the principles of cultivation, would change the whole face of the islands, we are fully persuaded. The Feceral Goverument should give these people their share of the impetus which in the last decade has gone around tbe country from the Centra! Farms, Ottawa. Any man devoting him- self exclusively to agriculture in the Mag~ dalenes would du well. A class of practica) agriculturists would do better in a mone- tary serse than the fishermen, and have none of their hardships. Butter, grain and pctatoes, eggs, beef, mu‘tou, pork and poultry, all sellhigb. Even bay, grown hy everybody, brings a fair price. We commeod the agricultural question to the attention of the Federal deputy, Mr. Lewieux.

On this All Right Islaud what plensed us particularly was the tidy condition of the holdings. Kvery single dwelling was nicely kept and whitewashed thorovghly, and, as might be expected ont of such nice tidy places, the people were good looking and ueatly dressed. I doubt if any country parish of this Province could turn out a more up-to date in dress con- greg tion withoutin any sense overdoing tbe thing than Havre-Aux-Maieons, There is none of the bead shaw! or coiffe to be seen, 80 long worn by our old Aca- dians bere. The hat has possession of the whole territory; and no doubt isa fertile source of mental trouble there as well as here. Nota single pair of mocessins did we notice elther; not even those which aspirants to legislative honors so of eo have towear. Lhe conveyances on the islands are somewhat rude atill.
