Obituary.

With feelings of deep regret we record the ;death, on Friday, 25th ult., of Mrs. James ‘Hughes, Bonwell. About a fortaight previous to the occurrence of this sad event, her young- est child, Lucinda, aged 7 years, also died.

| Mrs. Hughes was a kind, good, virtuous woe iman, and her loss will be keenly felt by her bereaved husband and seven remaining daugh-

ters, besides uther friends and acquaintances.

Her remains were interred at St. Ann’s Church, Lot 65, on Sunday evening Not. withstanding the very disagreeable weather,

the funeral was a large one, showing the re- spect in which she was held. To the bereaved husband and sorrowing family we exteud our sincere and deepest sympathy.

Meeting at Souris.

The roads being almost impasssble, and the weather unfavorable, the atcendance at the above meeting on the 3rd inat. was small. Owing to the poor representation of the patrons and shareholders, another geueral meeting will be held in the Hall at Souris on December Ist at 2 o'clock p. m. Notwithstanding the disagreeable travel- ling, the canvassers were to the front, and their reporta show that the necessary amount of stock and requisite number of {cows have been subscribed. So it only remains now to leave the matter in the ‘hands of persons capatle of discharging the ‘onerous duties of such an important trust. All interested in this important quesnon will, therefore, remember that at the next meating all the ofticers will be elected, by- laws drawn, and other important matters transacted; so, to prevent any discontent- ment at a future time, we strongly urge every patron and shareholder to attend this meeting. LETTERS 10 THE EDITOR

The Shortest and Best Route via Cape Traverse and Tormeniine.

Srr,—Ia a short time the Dominion Par- liament will assembla. [ feel it a duty to call the attention of our repre-entatives, both Dominion and local, also the editors of our local papers, and the public general- ly, to the great necessity there is for the extension of our pier here so a3 to give the public good harbor accommodation, The Government ought to bring down in their estimates a sum sufficient for this work; for they are aware of the amount required to give a fine harbor here from the esti- mates aid before them by able engineers. The contract, tov, ought to be let as soon as possible, as the work can be performed very much cheaper in winter than in sum- mer. My reasons are for pressing this matter, —

First—lt will be» great benefit to our farmers to have a harbor here, so that large vessels can come here to load with produce. At present we have to charter small schvoners to carry produce to larger vessels in other harbors. Thia causes an extra expense of from two to three centsa bushel. Consequently, the amount must come ovt of the farmers. [t must be apparent to every one that ‘times are so dull that it is almost impos sible for the poor farmers to get along, and they should have all the advantages rt is possible for the Government to give them, and every accommodation required by them to get their produce marketed, shoald have the attention of our representatives, as what will bonefit our farmers here will help every farmer directly or indirectly. [ would ask every farmer from Emeraid junction and all around this part of the country to Cape Traverse, to assist in bring ing this matter before cur representatives and the Government. It is our intention

to call a public meeting soon, inviting our

representatives, Dominion and local, to atrend; and we want every farmer to as- sist in making this meeting asuccess. We will have a petition and will pass strong resolutions, asking for our just rights and what has been promised us from time to time.

Second—Now that the pier is completed at Tormentine, N. B., and they have a! splendid harbor there, a vessel drawing 20! feet of water can go in at low tide. It has cost about four hundred thousand dol- lars, ($400,000) and it will be almost useless | unless we get a harbor here, so as to make connection. We have to pay our four- tieth part of that amount, and surely the! Government will not refuse to vote thirty | thousand ($30,000) to give us # good har-| bor. I know chat there are several plans _ specifications before the Government, able engineers, stating that it would ion about that amount to give us a fine harbor.

Third —As soon as we have a good harbor here, the N. B. and P. E. L. Railway Com- pany will put on a fast ateamer to connect the two points, and the Government would soun realize the amount of traffic it wou'd bring to our railway.

Fourth-—It would be a great advantage to the travelling public, in time and money. Just take a look at the time-tables. What do we find? Passengers leave Charlotte- town now vis Summerside at 7 o'clock a. m., and 6 o'clock, via Pictou. They ar- rive at Moncton by the Intercolonial at 14.45, and Truro at 2005. Whata differ- euce there would be if the route were via! Capes Traverse and Tormentine. A pas- senger would then leave Charlottetown at 9 o'clock a. m., and Summerside at 9.30, connect at Emerald Junction, and arrive at Sackville to conneet with the noon C. P. R. train, and arrive in Halifax at 6 o'clock, one howr and forty-five minutes ahead of the passengers via Pictou. And the sama advantage would be gained going west. Let a train leave Charlottetown at 4 o'clock p. m, and Summerside at 430 p. m., con- nect at Emerald Junction, arrive in Sack- ville to connect with the night train, pas- sengers would go to Montreal and all points sees. west on the same train as those who had crossed via Summerside in the morning, and would arrive in Halifax in the same train as passengers via Pictou! So, surely, ; the general public will see what a great advantage this route would be to chetravelile ing public—as well as the advantage of quick mail service.

Let all who are opposed to this route just stop and think for one minute, and their con- sciences will tell them that this is the route. The government should give the required har. bor at once.
