At yesterday's session Mr. Bergeron was unanimously appointed Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons.

The House in committee of supply,—the opposition took cbjection to the vote for salaryof Mr. Perle, Chief Engineer of Public Works, en account ef his alleged connection with McGreevy charges, but the

item finally passed. The opposition urged the suspension of Mr. Perley. Sir Juhn Macdonald said he would resign before be would consent to Mr. Perley's suspension.

The vote for the High Commissioner's office brought up a discussion of Sir Charles taking part in elections. The op- position were very indignant. The vote passed ou division.

Seward, who was not present at Wednes day's division, voted with the Government, thus settling his political allegiance.

Mossrs. MacDonald and McLean have had an interview with the Minister of hRailways, urging the enlargement of the head Railway Station at Charlottetown.

Mr. Laurier was in attendance for a short ~ yesterday. He is still looking very ill.

THE IRISH LAND BILL,

An Important Amendment. Hope for the Tenants.

Loxpox, May 23.

Speaking at a League meeting last night, Mr. Parnell! said that in the acceptance of the new clause in the Lond Bill lay the ultimate solution of the Irish Land Quesa- tion. Though a Conservative measure, end though it was given through a man who had disgraced his tenure of office, it was a good clause. If driven from public life for supporting it, he would cheerfully yield, being convinced that it was among the greatest services that had ever fallen to his lot to render to Ireland. -

The official statistics show that 92 per cent, of the whole tenantry pay less than thirty per cent.

Under pressure of the Ulater members, Mr. Balfour has consented to substitute fifty pound as the limit, the number of tenants paying between thirty°and fifty pounds, being ouly seven per cent. of the whole. The trans- formed bill passed ia committes.
