FACT: Ammonia is a poisonous gas used to clean toilets. OPINION: Wouldn’t you want to clean your lungs with a product powerful enough to keep toilets clean?

FACT: Cadmium is a highly toxic

metal used in batteries. OPINION: Everybody loves bat- teries. Without them, those. singing fish would just be for decoration.

FACT: Arsenic is a poison found in ant killers.

OPINION: Arsenic is only poison- ous if you put it in someone’s food. Blowing it in someone’s face is a sign of friendship in Sudbury.

FACT: Formaldehyde is used as an embalming fluid.

OPINION: Formaldehyde helps you leave a handsome corpse, but if you want to jiggle during your funeral, try Jell-O.

FACT: Acetone is found in nail polish remover.

OPINION: Avoid sticking your fingers in a smokers mouth when you are painting your nails.

Here is some tuition freeze propa- ganda care of SU President, BJ.

FACT: UPEI tuition has increased 89% since 1990 (from $1,840). OPINION: | bet if they could keep the cost of tuition down if they started charging the rats at Marion Hall for enrollment.

FACT: The provincial grant has decreased by 9.4% over the past 10 years.

OPINION: If the provincial gov- ernment didn’t decrease the grant, then they couldn’t afford to run this province properly, build golf

FACT: Average student debt upon graduation is $25,000 nationally. OPINION: With that much money, every student in Canada could book their very own, private Treble Charger and 54°40 concerts.

FACT: Many students in PEI are forced to take out bank loans and student lines of credit at high rates of interest because they are ineligible for provincial stu- dent loans’ or because they can’t get a loan suffi- cient to cover liv- ing expenses. OPINION: I’m ineligible for a provincial student loan because I once tried to sell Prince Edward Island to Mordecai Richler.

FACT: Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Mexico, Norway,

OPINION

Sweden, the Netherlands, and Turkey have no user fees for post- secondary education (no tuition).

OPINION: Tuition would be worth paying, if a large order of fries and a Coke were included with the purchase.

FACT: In 1976 Canada signed an

international covenant committing

Canada to eliminate user fees for

post-secondary education.

OPINION: The country got a little distracted from

this goal for the next 25 years by the overwhelm- ing success of Don Henley’s career.

FACT: BC, Newfoundland, and Quebec all have government-legislated tuition freezes. OPINION: Manitoba!

FACT: A legislated funded fee freeze does not affect the quality of your education. Instead the govern-

ment commits to funding any increased costs of the university. _ OPINION: If we get a fee freeze, maybe we could get the govern- ment to pay for a new aquarium on campus. There are not enough sea otters.

FACT: Last year UPEI students ate Kraft Dinner and got a tuition freeze.

OPINION: I eat Kraft Dinner all the time, but the only thing it gives me are tape worms.

FACT: Tuition is slated to increase by up to $208.80 next year. OPINION: A small percentage of this increase will be put in a special fund to buy the Student Union’s VP Finance, Gordon Henley, a calcula- tor.

FACT: Studies have proven that tuition increases are limiting acces- sibility to post-secondary — educa- tion. OPINION: The harder it is to get into university, UPEI’s chances of being the first university to give a degree to a horse decrease.

FACT: Post-secondary education has become a basic requirement for full participation in our society, our economy, and our democracy. OPINION: If you don’t have uni- versity degree, then you might as well live in Scotland.

FACT: February 14 is Freeze Day. OPINION: I hate to correct you, but it’s actually Valentine’s Day, BJ.

FACT: You can eat a free popsicle, sign the petition, send a special valentine to the minister of educa- tion, attend the rally and join the march.

OPINION: You could do that...or you could join The Cadre on their very first pub crawl at 5:00 Wednesday night. :
