Clearly, Widow Arnold's hens were the cause of James Henry's shiftiessness. One day « fearful clatter proceaded from the hen house; cackle, cackle, cackle, cut, cul, cut, cutarker, cried the hens ; then the old rooster meunted upog a barrel at the door and flap- ped his wings in a triumphant fashion, and crowed so lusiily that Mrs. Arnold, who was frying doughnuts in the kitchen, exclaimed :

The Tributein Memoriam to Charles Sumner is by W. W. Story, with whose contributions,both in prose and poetry the pages of Blackwood are occasionally en- riched. No.6 of ‘International Vanities” comes to us like a letter from an old friend. It treates of Diplomatic Privileges, and tells us how the telegraph and rapid postal delivery have diminished the importance of the pro- fession of ambassadore, and left it ‘though stillsuperior to lawyering, doctoring, and soldiering,’’ only a faded remnant of its fors mer self.
