Stock Prices Hold Steady In New York

NEW YORK, Aug. 2—Buying of relatively modest proportions, cen- terfng in motors and steels. turned the stock market tide today and lifted leaders fractions to more than 3 point-s. '

Late profit-taking cut down top marks, but many issues. particu- larly specialties, ended at. or near best levels for the day. i

After the close the “daily metal trade" reported a. price-cutting war had broken out in the steel industry with some independent producers slashing black sheets. used by automobile manufacturers and motor equipment makers, as much as $4 a ton.

Canadian issues were generally steady. International Nickel ad- vanced l l-4 points to 50 5-8. Dis- tillers, McIntyre. Walkers and Massey Harris improved fractions. Lake Shore, Marconi and Dome Mines each lost 1-8 of a point.

Motor stocks also were believed to have been buoyed by the action of General Motors directors late Monday in voting the regular divi- dend of 25 cents.

Transfers totalled 817.640 shares against 586,510 the day before which was the lightest in more than six weeks. The Associated Press average of G0 stocks was up .5 of a point at 49.2.

Receipts on Montreal livestock markets: cattle 9i; calves 481; hogs 712; sheep and lambs 90

Cattle were. mostly cows and bulls. Prices were unchanged on cows and bulls were slo\v sellers at lower prices. Butcher cows made $3 to $4.75 with canriers and cutters at $2 to $2.75. Good _ bulls were from $3.50 to $4 with com- mon kinds from $2.50 to $3.25.

Calves were firm. Good quality veals brought $7.50 with tops up to $8. medium kinds up to $7 and common light veals and drinkers down to $4. Grassers were from $4 to $4.75.

Gold ewes and wethers were $9 with a cut of $1 per cwt on bucks and up to $2 per cwt on culls. Sheep were from $2.50 to $4.

Bacon hogs were moving slowly at $11 fed and watered. Selects drew $1 per hog premium. Butch- ers and heavies were cut50cclits
