The Herald concludes from its pre- mises that the churches are not re- taining their proper inﬂuence over the minds of men. It says:

“Religious worship is degenerating into a cold formalin: from which the life and spirit is departing. The churches are partially ﬁlled because social custom has madait rcspestableto go toohuroh..-Sen- saticnal -jssachisg and attractive side showsarefonnd useful in meeting the of the , people. The spirit of true worship is departing.”

In this one cannot but feel that there is much truth. The new force that seems to be gathering strength behind the Christian batallions. has not ,yet permeated all. But the laity are as much to blame as the clergy. Listless

pleasure and hardened alike to the voice of pulpit and of conscience will chills service no matter. how earnest the preacher. It is too often expected that the clergyman has- to do allthe work of the church and that sh_e_'lsy- men._huve only to sit in theirpewaand pay their contributions. Give a clergy- man a faithful band of lay workers, as many this city have,-and— there will be so complaint that the servicm are degenerating.
