CIVIC TAX APPEALS 172 persons have appeared before the Appeal .Court in this city and en- tered formal complaints concerning the present civic rates and assess- ments. Of an original total of 230 appeals entered. 58 have been withdrawn. The decisions of the Court will be announced at a later date.

CAR COLLISION - A vehicle driven by an R.C.M.P. officer was damaged slightly in a collision yesterday with a truck. The in- cident occurred when the truck which was proceeding west on Fitzroy Street reportedly passed a stop sign causing it to strike the Mountle'a car which was go- ing north on Weymouth Street at the time. The l-'l..C.MiP. car turned around and gave chase. catching the truck at the corner of Euaton and Pownal strectr. The car sus- tained alight damage to the right rear fender and rear bumper, and the truck is reported to have been undamaged.

POLICE COURT - In women charged with being drunk and in- capable was sentenced to :5 anti costs or 5 days by the Stlpendiary Magistrate at the City Police Court yesterday. The case of a man charged with operating a motor vehicle without a. permit was re- manded one week. A man convict- ed of being drunk and incapable was sentenced to 20 days in Coim- ty Jail.

JUNIOR WOMEN MEET - A well attended meeting of the Junior Women's Association of Trinity United Church was held on Wednesday evening, March 26 inn the West Parlor. The presi- dent, Mrs. Fred B. Gamble, was in the chair. After the reading of the minutes by the scretary. Mrs. J. 0. Montgomery, a discussion of various projects followed. and a committee was named to enquire into the matter of supporting a Missionary in his foreign work. MARITIME BUSINESS - The Business Review of the Bank of Montreal for March says: Retail trade has been adversely affected by heavy snowstouu. which great- ly restricted movement by rail and road. In most lines sales have been down compared with last year. Wholesale trade, however, generally compares favorably with a year ago although hardware sales were down 1295. Collections are fair to good. Manufacturers are well employed except cotton mills which are still operating on a part-time basis. Heavy atoms have made woods conditions the worst in many years and : some large operators have had to cease operations for the time being. The lumber market is quiet but there is a good demand for peeled pulp- wood and pitprops. Potato ship- ments dropped off during the month but the price has climbed steadily in New Brunswick to 37.45 per barrel loaded. which compares with also a year ago. Fresh fish catches for the month were again above average. Dried fish stocks are below normal with prices firm. Steel mills operated at 05.0196 of rated capacity.

"The communion of saints" w'as're-establish itself In Anglican use

in recent years. Both of these special days em- phasize one truth-the continuing fellowship between those who serve Christ on earth and those who serve him beyond the veil of death. This truth needs constant reassu- iion. It is the only adequate solace in bereavement, and the only adequate safeguard against allur- ing, but often illusory, substitutes for the communiun of saints. Although cmphasis on this doc- trine has often been a feature of the "catholic" side of Christian history, the doctrine itself has never been better expressed than in the poem of Richard Baxter, the great seventeenth.-century puritan- "He wants not friends

that hath thy love," printed in many modern hymn books. In this doctrine he found solace in

adversity, finding that in the com- munion of saints was "wisdom, safety and delight."

These are the essential notes of the communion of saints-joint, sharing in the life of Christ, which! works alike in those who belong to! the Church triumphant; and joint: sharing in that godward life of worship and prayer, which is the supreme blessing. of ”the dead which die in the Lord." and the clearest. anticipation of final bless- ednoss open to those still on pil- grlmagc.

THE WORLD'S AUDIT

We often speak of life as hav- ing a system of book-keeping. and later on giving an account of it.- self. A fundamental part of edu- cation is arithmetic. Among the first things we did at school was to count. and we know how vit- ally figures have concerned us ever since.

Indeed so far does this go that when we estimate a man we quite innocently think in terms of ma- thematics. That is our one system of dimensions. How many dollars did he succeed in gathering to- gether during his lifetime? That is an asccrtainable thing, an elg. mentary question of mathematics.

This is seen in our obituary notices. We number the years of the dead, telling how many sum- mers and winters they lived, cat- alogue the concern with which they were identified. and tell in round numbers what they were "worth".

We even put it on the tomb- stones. We give titles and may add a "holy text". All this is quite legitimate and deserving and commendable; but while it is the world's audit. and may be quite fairly clone, it tells only a fraction of the total nieaning of one's life.

For there are elusive things that do not find themselves in the table of statistics.be the calculator ever so careful. We may measure,water- power and estimate rainfall. but who can weigh a sunbeam? or who can tell the value in dollars and cents of a rose garden? We can calculate the speed of the wind as it races over the downs, or spreads the farmera' haystacka across the field. but we cannot measure the distances that love's tireless feet may travel.

Old Rabbi Ben Esra. stood one day and watched the world weigh- ing thinga and then said that there were many things that did not lend themselves to such me- chanical calculation. There were commodities, which cold utility would find as. light as air, but which the "world's coarse thumb" could not value in a trice. A great deal was hurriedly passed by which would in the end "swell the man's amount.”
