Now that the November elections are over, the slate makers wil! soon be hard at work figuring on the probabilities of the next Presidential election. The fact that the Democrats failed to carry New York has set the western Democrats to claiming that with a western man—say & politician from Ohio—the Presidency might be won by the Democrats. The total number of electoral votes in all the States for the elec- tion of a President is now 401, so that 201 would be necessary toa choice, The States

These States, it will be seen, give alto- gether 97 electoral votes. If the Demo- crats can carry New York, New Jersey, and either of the Pacific States, California or Oregon, it would give them the election. The same result would follow if they car- ried New York, New Jersey and Nevada. If they lose New York and New Jersey they will. require to carry Ohio, Indiana, California and either Nevada or Oregon to carry the election. New York, therefore seems to be the pivot on which the election will turn, and it may be said with a reason~ able degree of certainty that the party which carries that great State will win the Presidency. For reference we append the names of the States which are pretty cer- tain to be carried by the Republicans :—

These States will give 151 electoral votes. A Long Lived Family.
The Truckee Republican, in speaking of a well known Sacramentan, says: R. A..G. Gourlie, of Freeport, Cal., was in Truckee yesterday. As coming from a long-lived family, Mr. Gourlie. is worthy of notice He is eighty-one years old, has lived in Sacramento county since 1849, and has never until now been out of the county. His residence is, at Freeport, ten miles from Sacraniento, where he has a sixty- acre orchard. Mr. Gourlie was the third man to plant the United States flag on the heights of San Juan De Arc, on the 14th of August, 1827. For twenty-two years and seven months he was asailor in the British navy, and still re- taifis retnémbrances of his old ship life. ~ Of a long-lived family, he still clings to the hope of years in advance, equal to the usually allotted span of man’s life. His great-grandmother lived to the remarkable age of 123 years. His grandmother, at the age of fifty-seven used glasses and was devoid of teeth. The lady lived to the grand old age of 117, and at ninety-five years of age recovered her eye-sight and discarded her glasses. The youngest of his uncles, eleven in number, Jean Gourlie, lived to be 102 years old. Bob, the subject of the present sketch, although eighty-one years old, is as vigorous as most men at forty, and can kick a man’s hat off without any trouble. Some yeare ago himself and_ wife adopted a girl and brought her up to the age of maturity, when she married Victor Mondon, résiding in Sierraville. The occa- sion of the present visit is to see the adopted daughter, and also to secure the healing advantages of the sulphur springs. Although. the first time that he has been ont of Sacramento county, he says he is contented to know that he still has a long lease of life, and expects to come back again shortly and see his wife cejuvenated and made young again from her stay at the springs. Mr. Gourlie is a remarkable specimen of a well preserved old gentleman of the olden time.

The Commissioner of Police of Madras has received the following curious native petition, which was numerously signed: —
Resrected Srr.—We, the undersigned in- habitants of Numgumbakum, beg to bring to your notice the existence of what we sorely fee] an unmitigated public nuisance, and pray for its immediate removal. Amid a thick, dark, shady grove, about only 100 yards from the Hgra haaem, and not a half a furlong from the public road, there is a Kali temple, which, from the peculiar nature of its situation, has been marked out as an advantageous place of soothsaying and exorcism. Here once a week (and now twice or thrice, as he chooses) a soothesyer manages to gather about him a number of people of both sexes apd various vastes by his powers, of which we need hardly say anything, of soothsaying, casting out devils, ete.

Roman Lonpon anp Saxon Lonpoyx.— Saxon London was different from its Roman predecessor. When we examine the direc- tion of the Roman remains, says Mr, Loftie, the facing, for example, of a villa, 2s shown by its pavement, we do not find it coincide’ with the direction of the modern streets. The barbarian did not in truth care forthe polished luxury of the then civilization; be built his pigsty or his. cattle pen where the palatial residence of the conquered Roman was, and he resided him- self in his wattle and daub or his timber dwelling. The map of Saxon London is or should be the map, medified here and there by topographical obstructions of a town community. The forum gave way to the foldmoot, meeting in the open eir at the spot well known by its name, near St. Paul’s Cross. No grand roofs were re- quired by free Saxons. The markets—the tradesmen congregating in their special logalities—the gates and streets, with theie néw “riames, all betoken a different life to that of the solemn-hearted Roman.
