To the cditor:

Every time I read a new issue of the X-PRESS, I am left with the overwhelming feeling that I must be an extraordinary optimistic person. Why on earth, I wonder, do I keep reading this paper, hoping that the spelling and grammar will improve to the point where I can read an entire paragraph without wincing, and that the editor will research his topic and compose a considered and thoughtful argument when writing his editorial? I guess I must be nothing but a Utopian socialist dreamer. After all, consider the editorial of November 7, 1991, concerning the operation on CIMN. Cory Large began his editorial by wondering about the discrepancy between the number of people who heard of CIMN and the number that listen to CIMN, and then proceeded to show himself to be most unequivocally a member of the former group. This is unfortunate, as one has to wonder if, had Mr. Large researched his topic, he might have escaped looking so utterly foolish. He twice states that ‘*... the management should allow the DJ’s to play the kind of music they enjoy.’’ Unless I am grossly mistaken, this is already the practice at CIMN. If there is a torture chamber concealed somewhere in the studio where DJ’s are beaten until they agree to play what the managers like, then I would hope that Cory Large will fulfil his journalistic mandate and grace

_ expose in the next issue. The editor goes on to sug-

_ gest that this ‘‘shift’’ in policy would ‘‘... help to

_ ensure a wider variety of music to be played [sic].”’

_ My dear deluded Cory! Consider this scenario. In

_ preparation for putting my heavy metal/hard rock

_ show on the air, I was trained, along with two gentle-

_ men wishing to put out acountry show, by a fellow

_ broadcasting a punk/underground format. CIMN

_ broadcasts jazz, rap, and any form of music the DJ's

| want to put on the air. The meaning of the ‘‘alterna-

| tive’’ concept has been beautifully explained in the

' last issue by Messrs, Sutherland, St.-Pierre, Hanus,

_ Cheverie, and Genge, and requires no further com-

| ment, tomy mind,

I must, however, continue to take issue with Mr. Large’s editorial, Not only is his information on CIMN flawed, but so is his argument. He states that CIMN’s format does ‘',., not appeal to the majority

that there is a ‘‘limited market’’ for CIMN’s format on the Island. It’s so nice in this day-to-day world we live in, to see someone actually conducting a prohibitively expensive market study out of pocket for purely philanthropic motives. Or have you, Mr. Large? Dear, dear. It’s simply not possible to presenta viable argument based on hyperbole, inac- curacies, and bluster.

Mr. Large states that if his suggestions were imple- mented, it “*... would be a more accurate representa- tion of the student body.’’ I’m going to be optimistic again, and assume that there is a distinct possibility that he would be representing the students of this university better if when expressing his views be made sure his facts were correct and his argument was carefully thought out. Finally, the fact that the X- PRESS and CIMN are both Student Union organiza- tions is not of prime importance in my opinion, as I don’t feel the students need to write to protect medi- ocrity. But by the same token that I would support Mr. Large’s right to criticize CIMN were his argu- ment founded in fact, I claim my right to criticize this embarrassing piece of journalistic foolishness. In my unending optimism, I hope you will correct it.
