five or six marathons. Mr. Leblanc is also a member of the Charlottetown Lions Club, and he participates in the Holy Redeemer Church Choir’ singing bass. While he was at Guelph, he was involved in a West Indies band playing the bongos.

In comparing his university life with today, he believes there’s a great difference in student life. He believes too many traditional things are overlooked, and there’s a lack of spirit in non-academic life. He feels that the university spirit should externally manifest especially in the autumn to reveal the love and unity of UPEI. For example, football teams play an important part in unity and spirit. Sports and events pass without acknowledgement. Because of these factors, UPEI’s blood isn’t constantly boiling in contrast to other universities. Another point Mr. Leblanc feels that UPEI is different from other universities is the students’ ignorance of the importance of

traditions at university. In some cases students change traditions instead of handing them down. He explained

examples with the yearbook and newspaper. Almost every year the newspaper and yearbook changes names to whatever suits. He argues that the yearbook originally called Nexus, revealed great tradition. When Saint Dunstan and Prince of Wales college joined to form the University of Prince Edward Island, there was a competition to decide a name for the yearbook. A biology student won fifty dollars with the word "Nexus" which means ‘join" in latin. The yearbook’s name has since been changed, and it has lost its

syrbolic meaning. He reveals that these are only a couple of examples of what the university lacks. He has seen through the generations of years that students haven’t been making an effort to pass down traditions. Sophomores should indoctrinate freshman and traditions should perpetuate year after year. He believes, however, that one person who is attempting to maintain tradition is Dr. Eliot.

Ninian Leblanc’s advice to today’s student is a student should know why he or she is on campus. After knowing the primary purpose for being here, they then shouldn’t give up when the going gets tough. He explains we should know for sure if we want to go to university instead of wasting time and pressure. That’s great advice from a man who knows how living things click.
