Doctors will differ you know—avd more information was veeded, It was, conse- quently resolved to have a conference of representatives from Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, aud P. E Island, in order that a scheme may be agreed on, which will embrace, and as far as possible satisfy the requirements of, the various Provinces, and which will, at the same time, commend itself to the Minister.

Dr. ‘Taylor. of this city, and several other leading physicians iu the Maritime Provinces have, we learn, received communicatious on the subject.

There can be ne question that, from a public point of view, this matter is ove of very great importance. It is not credi'able to this country that we are yet without any means whatever of sys- tematically co lecting statistics relating to the births, lives, diseases, aud dea:hs of the people.

Thanks to the Dominion Government, and especially to the Minister of Agricul- ture, a movement has at last been made towards supplying the want; and it is gratifying to kuow that the movemeat is

rauteed the expenses of a deputation to attend the proposed Conference ; and there can be no reasonable doubt that the authorities of other large cities will do likewise. We wast a system which will suit, not the large cities ouly, bat the smaller towns in all parts of the eountiy. It follows that the smaller towas in all parts of the country should be well rep-esented at the Con- ference, by the decision of which the Mini-tery will, no doubt, be governed. We trustthat our City Board of Health, the City Council and the Local Govern- ment will, jointly or separately, take measures to secure a good representation. Outver Mowat, Premier of Ontario, is hav- ing a hard time of it, He was waited on a few days ago by a deputation of Episcopalian, Presbyterian, and Methodist ministers, who u-ged upov him the use of the Bible in Public Schools, No doubt the enbject has Mr. Mowat’s sympathy but with Archbishop Lynch at his side it will not doat present to give the matter much consideration.

Tue Gromoff lumber yard, the largest in Europe, has been burned. It is situated on the banks of the Neva, nearly at the end of the Neusky Prospekt. The wind, fortunately, localized the conflagration, which might have enveloped the whole neighborhood. There were in the woodyard 3,000,000 plenks and 200 000 beams. The yard covers a superficial space of more than a million square yards. The value of the contents is estimated at $4,001,000, of which at this time one-half is

Follys Victims.

In the course of a sermon recently de- livered, an eloquent preacher directed attention to the crowds of boys and girls who, every evening, between the hours of seven and tep, idly spend their time, unprotected by parent or friend, upon the public streets. It seems that Char- lottetown is not the only town which is very lax in this respect. From Toronto, from Montreal from Halifax, from other Canadian towns we have the same report ; and recently ia Chicago a young girl paid the penalty of her imprudence by commit- ting suicide in the Policestation It is sta- ted that she was not worse than thousands of other girls —that she only carried her propensity for flirting in the streets in the evening jnst a little further than the others.

Her fate is a terrible warning to parents who suffer their children to wander unprotected in the streets after nightfall; and it is a terrible warning to light-minded girls whose parents are not sufficiently strict.

His Excertency and the Princess have had a pleasant time out in British Columbia. The Indians did them great honor, one of the Chiefs even going so jar as to present Her Qoyal Highness with a pair of blankets. The Vice- Regal party leave Victoria for Ottawa ou Monday next.

France and Tunis.

The French Government has resuacitated the treaty between the Bey of Tunis and M. de Freycinet, and it will be submitted to the Chambers for ratification. The powers practically approve of the treaty, by which France undertakes to redeem the Tunisian debt. The immediate conse- quence of the transfer of the debt will be

the abolition of the commission charged for the supervision of the Tunisian revenues. The treaty also stipulates that

France shall have the right to send before a French tribunal, to be esta lished in Tunis, all cases of litigation. An account was given of the work of excavation that is now going on, with desecri:- tions of the works of art found among the ruins, and shewing, how in many instances, they surpass the chef d’ cuvres of our own civiliza- tion, The rev. doctor touched, in a humorous way, on many incidents in his travel to and ab ut Naples, interspersing his discourse wish many z2ood passages, embodying generall, some crisp philosophic truth —an artin which the learned doctor is well skilled, and which tenis to make his lectures, on many subjects, popular and ixstructive.
