TEAM LOOKS GOOD!

The 1970 football season marks the beginning of a new era in the history of university football on Prince Edward Island. For the past ten years, Coach Ed Hilton has guided university football on P.E.I. Now, Coach Hilton has re- tired from the ranks of coaching. Hilton is being succeeded by young and ambitious Don Palov. Coach Palov is relatively new in the coach- ing profession. On the plus side of the ledger, Coach Palov was assistant mentor at University of New Brunswick, the school which won .the Bluenose Conference. Assisting Palov, is Fred MacLean, former All-League center. Coach MacLean will commandier the of- fensive lineman. Former All-League fullback Gerry Lajeunesse will coach the offensive backfield. Lajeunessés brillant collegiate career was halted by cancer in his leg. Coach Jack Kane will again be back on the gridiron. Kane will do defensive line work.

After last year’s disastrous 1-5 season, Coach Palov sent out a 8.0.3. to Island football players. What did he get? Well, for a starter, he grabbed Brian Affleck from Charlottetown. Brian is the brother of former S.D.U. hockey great, Dennis Affleck. Brian 'po- ssesses all of the tools to be a

great defensive football player. Paul a

Norris joins the U.P.E.I. team.

from Colonel Gray High School in Charlottetown. Norris has a great load on his shoulders. The line has always been a problem with Island football teams, and this season is no exception. The U.P.E.I. lineman are adequate, but there are not enough of them. Norris is one of the brightest prospects from P.E.I. Another windfall is U.P.E.I. senior Mike Gaudet from Summerside. Gaudet has all of the equipment to be a fine football player. He turned in the fastest time in the forty yard dash for linemen and

he is a big man at 5 feet 11 inches 215 pounds. From Montague, P.E.I.

Coach Palov recruited quarterback- defensive back Scott Miller. Miller received Prince Edward Island ’s Sportsman of the Year award. One of the big surprises of the training camp was little Gordon Wilson from Charlottetown Rural High School. Wilson is a soccer-style place kicker. In recent practices, Wilson has booted fourty yard field goals. The value of such a player is immense. John Creighen, Glen Claybourne are promising backs from Colonel Gray High School.

Coach Palov has also recruited some out of province athletes. Quarterbacks will be the question mark on the team. Mr. Quarterback, Jim Foley, graduated last year and he is going to be difficult to replace.

to John Dionisi and Mike Read. At the fullback slot vacated by Jerry Lajeunesse, there will be no problem in finding a replacement In fact, the backfield is full of hard-hitting rushers. Jack iaiyron‘ 'and Bill Oehlre, both newcomers

to the green,'white, and rust teem, would be the premiere rushers of the league. Also on the line from out of the province come Doug Hope and Peter Morris. Both will be important on the defensive corps.

The bulk of the team comes from the sophs, junior, and seniors. In the backfield from last Season are supersophs Don Murray, Jim Paolini and Dick Yost. With these three runners, U.P.E.I. should host the most explosive ground game in the conference. Jackie “One Hand” Sands will be at flanker and should have a great season. On the all important line, the situation looks A-OK. But a few injuries could cripple the team. U.P.E.I. lacks the depth on both the offensive and

game last year. 'But Bednar is big

and strong and will probably be the best lineman in Island football

history. Mike Darcy is in great shape and will be one of the

league’s best defensive tackles. The

centering position is secure in the hands of Bill Corcoran. The ageless wonder, Wayne Trainor will again

be doing the same steady job as offensive guard. Bobby Connaught- on will be playing his final year of college football, and the big tackle should be out‘to knock afew heads, Garv Mancuso will be back at his usual offensive tackle posi- tion. Mancuro was All-League in his sophomore year and the big tackle will be out to play ball for the last time. Ray Holz has been shifted from linebacker to offensive tackle. Holz has the speed and

maneuverability to be an effective pulling guard. Big Al MacDonald will team up with Doug We‘bber

at the defensive guard positions. MacDonald is one of the team’s most underrated players. The end position could be a problem. Marty Coles retums at tight end but he has had only a few receptions in his collegiate career up to this season. The elegibility of Peter Sprague has yet to be ascertained. The big defensive end would be a great help to the team.

So, the overview of the U.P.E.I. Panthers is favorable. A lot of talent was on the team last season, but a defeatist attitude was fos- tered by dissention. This season, however, Coach Palov has taken command of the team with his quiet efficiency. His class and mild— mannerdness command respect. The Panthers meet the Acadian Uni- versity Axemen on September 19th at 1:30 pm, so come and see the Panthers in action.

Tennis anyone ?

Tennis ‘anyone‘? that’s the cry on the U.P.E.I. campus this fall.

Whatever your skill level from no- vice to varsity calibre there is ample opportunity for you to improve and practice your game. The courts -just south of the U.P.E.I. gym- nasium, are reserved Monday through Thursday from 3:30 until

‘5:00 for instructional tennis. The

classes will be coeducational. Intramural tennis will be carried

on in a ladder tournament. To register simply come to the courts at any time and put your name on the bottom of the lad er. By challenging other people higher on the ladder an (1 being challenged by those lower than yourself a lot of keen competition will be avail- able. There is no deadline for entries and the closing date of the competition will be announced later. Fore more specific informa- tion on how a ladder tournament

Anyone wishing, to try out for varsity tennis is urged to leave his name at the Athletic Depart- ment office during registration week. There will be four players

~picked to represent the University

at the A.I.A.A. tennis champion- ships at U.N.B. in Fredericton on September 26th.
