Pressing For Higher Gravel Trucking Rates

The truck drivers hauling grav- el for the County Construction Company to the Georgetown road arc planning refusal to haul any more gravel beginning Thursday morning unless trucking rates are raised, it was learned yesterday.

The truclcmen had previously decided to make the deadline this Imorning. biil learned later that ,Prcmier J. W. Jones would not re- ,Ilil'll to the Island until Wednes- day or Thursday. A delegation of the irucknien has been appointed to wait on Mr. Jones on Thursday, and until word is received from this delegation, the truckmen will refuse to haul gravel.

The present. trucking rate sched- ule as established by the govern- ment is as follows. The normal load carried by the trucks is four yards.

Ten cents per yard per mile for the first five miles.

E'iRhts cents per yard par for the next ten miles.

Six rents per yard per mile for mileage above fifteen miles.

The truckmcii want a two

boost across the hoard in above rates.

Further. the government rate per hour for hauling clay for fill in jobs is 3.2.50. The iruckmen want this rate raised to 33.00 per hour.

Two years ago the made a similar request to the Government to have the rates raised. but they were unsuccessful. At this time. in view of the added cost of living. they are once again presenting their request for a boost. in the rates.

Mirs. A. N. Macrhercon and Min Evelyn MacPherscn, entertained the Kilmuir Women's Institute for their regular monthly meetins On Thursday evening.

The president, Mrs. P. W. Mac- Donald. conducted the meetng in the usual manner. Ten members answered roll call with a house cleaning hint. Six visitors were welcomed to the meeting.

The minutes of the last meet- mg were read and &Pl3'0V"I- A bill for one treat was presented and paid. Plans were made for serving lunches at the film show willi be shown in the school in the near future.

Correspondence was read by the secretary, Miss Anne MacDonald, and discussed to some length. A renewal card from the library. lili- lng an extension for two m0nlh-5 was received. The April paper by Mrs. M N. Maccowan. convener of home economics, was read by Mrs. D. Stewart and Mrs. W. E. Mc- Kenna. '

The schod committee gave their report of the progress made in getting a pump for the school and agreed to meet with the school trustees as soon as possible. The sick committee reported making two calls. All committees were re- appointed for the following month. Miss Anne MacDonald gave an in- teresting report of the executive meeting which was held at Heath- erdale for the purpose of making plans for the district convention.

An auction of remnants was held and the sum of 35.76 was added to the funds. The program was post- poned until the next meeting, when members are invited to the home of Mrs. Dan Stewart.

Roll call is to be an exchange of seeds, plants, or bulbs. The meet- ing adjourned by singing the Nat- ioiial Anthem. Delicious refresh- ments were served by the hostess.

SOUTH WINSLOE W. I.

The May meeting of South Win- sloe Women's Institute met at the home of Mrs. Val McDonald on May 8th with a good attendance of ten members and one visitor. Meeting opened by singing "The More We Get Together", followed hv the Creed. Roll call was an- swered by passing in bulbs, seeds. cic

Minutes of previous meeting were approved as read. Discussion on business arising from the min- rites followed. Mrs. E. Hughes and Mrs. Skinner were appointed to see Mr. Gass of the Telephone Com- pany concerning the system in this district.

It was decided to get a play to come to the hall and to sell sand- wiches and drinks. Those interest- ed were asked to meet at the home of Mrs. Hughes on May 22nd to pack woollen rags for shipment to "Fairfields."

Mrs. Skinner and Mrs. Hughes gave an interesting report from T. B. annual meeting. stating -the need of contributing funds by the means of Christmas Seals. and the importance of each and every one
