MIRACLES OF MEMORY. The Extraordinary Feats Performed by Chess Master Pillsbury,

One of the most extraordinary feats of memory known was that of Henry Nelson Pillsbury, the American chess master, when he played 20 simul- taneous games without seeing any of the boards. One blindfolded game is far beyond the power of 99 out of 100 chess players, but Mr. Pillsbury suc- ceeded in the colossal task of remem- bering for several hours the constantly changing positions of 640 bits of wood.

Not only did he win 14, draw five and lose but one of these 20 games, but at the close also remembered the details of every play and corrected several mistakes which had been made in record'ng them.

Wonderful as this is, it need alarm Mr. Pillsbury’s friends witk fears of a mental breakdown. He has merely given the world one of the most remarkable examples of what we cal) visualism, a peculiar and rarely culti- veted function of memory.

There is nothing abnormal in a feat of this kind, and it need not be regard- as an enormous strain upon the Abnormality only appears when one faculty stultifies all the others. The probable fact is that Pillsbury has discovered a better method of play- ing chess than others, which makes a hitherto impossible task comparatively easy for him. I am certain that he could not have played 20 tables by the aid of any artificial memory system.

These systems are like crutchcs— they help up to a certain point and then are apt to hinder. Visualizing is simply a matter of concentration and development of a certain pictorial qual- ity of memory. Those who are most likely to excel are those who devote themselves entirely to one mental pur- suit. They develop the faculty of be- coming oblivious of all that takes place around them.

I once knew a minister who mem- orized his sermon by this method of visualizing. He would reproduce his mind the manuscript just as it had been written, so that whenever it was blotted he would have difficulty in re- membering it. Most of us have this power to some slight degree, and it may be cultivated. One of the simplest methods of strengthening the memory in this line is to endeavor to recall what we have seen during a walk through the streets.

Some people seem to be entirely without this power of mental pbotog- raphy, and the following story is some- times used in classrooms as a test: The story relates that when Napoleon was visiting one of the military hospitals in Paris he stopped by the bedside of an old soldier who had lost both an arm and a leg. The old soldier in an ecstasy of loyalty sprang from the bed and, drawing his sword, cut off with a sin- gle biew his one remaining arm.

If Pillsbury were to be to! story, he would see its oh alll at once, but a person who has no power of representing ideas as pictures would believe it to be a possible occurrence.

Ants Alarmed by Sounda,

Recent observations tending to show that ants possess a sense of hearing have been described in this column. Professor Metcalf of the Woman’s col- lege, Baltimore, adds some interesting testimony on the subject in a letter to Science. One of his students discover- ed that a colony of black ants was

by sounds of one particular pitch. Oth- er sounds did not affect them, but when the peculiar note was struck, either on a violin or with a whistle, the ants would become excited and if the sounds were continued would grow frantic, some of them falling into a water moat surrounding their nest. Ants of other species paid no atten- tion to the sounds.

Siam’s Navy.

The Siamese navy consists of be- tween 40 and 50 vessels, the largest of which is a well armored and capable vessel of 3,000 tons, named the Ma- hachaxri. Nearly all the vessels are armed with quick firing, modern guns and are manned by native crews who are strictly disciplined and have shown considerable adaptability as_ sailors. There are three or four English, Dan- ish or German officers on each of the vessels of the fleet, the only American being Dr. Hayes of Baltimore, who is a surgeon ©» the staff of Admiral de Richelieu
