At the Stipendiary Magistrate's Court this forenoon, the case of Henderson vs. Horne for assault, was postponed till to-morrow.

Now it is proposed to have the Governor ship awarded to the lowest bidders; and the names of Senator Haythorne and Richard Heartz, and Duncan McRae are freely imen- tioned in connection with the office

Ir is reported here that the American Union telegraph line has already handed over $175,- 000 to the Dominion line for the purpose of enabling the latter to prosecute needed exten- sions in the Dominion.

® Tue pus? to-day is very dense. High winds and streets dry cause dense clouds of dust to rise, drifting in the air with terrible fury. ‘The water-cart driver is almost suffocated, his little sprinkler is almost powerless for good or barm—save the tax it imposes on dust ridden citizens.

Tue steam yacht Nooya, Capt. Bernier, arrived at Pictou on Sunday. She has on board M. Saye, a wealthy French gentleman, who is enjoying the summer by cruising around the Canadian coast, accompanied by his lady, and a stai! of servants, besides the regular crew. The yacht is a beantiful one, and is kept in mansof-war style, the crew being in uniform and under discipline. She will re- main at Pictou about a fortnight.

YesTerviy.as Hon. Frederick Brecken was returning from Kensington he discovered a small boy named McKenna on the shore, near low water mark, rolling in the sand. He re- ported the matter to the police. They went wheré the lad was lying. and finding him to be insane, took him to his parents. Had he not been «discovered, itis the opinion of the officer that he would have been drowned on the return of the tide.

Tay walking match between Owen Mc- Closkey and Thomas Wakeland, for thirty dollars a side, commenced in the Citizens’ Skating Rink at 10 o'clock this morning. Both started in good spirits, and, up to our going to press, are walking handsomely. The contest will be intensely exciting al the close, as the nie are well matched. The following is the score up till 2 o'clock :

“Shocking Death.

A CHILD FALLS FROM A FOUR-STORY WINDOW, AND IS DEAD IN TWENTY MINUTES.

A heart-rending accident occurred on Prince William street, St. John, on Wednesday morning soon after eleven o'clock. A little girl, sixteen months old, daughter of Mr. John C. Palmer, janitor of the building, was killed by falling from a window in the fourth story of Pugsley’s building, corner of Church street, to the asphalt pavement. The child’s mother had left her in « room and gone down to the street to-cail in an older child, and on arriving at the street door was horrified by the body of her infant child falling at her feet. The cnild had crawled through the protecting slats of the window in the room in which she had been left and fallen out! The poor little thing struck on the top and left side of her head, crushing it a little, causing the centre part of the left ear to protrude, and the blood to ooze from the right ear, besides spraining the left wrist. The agonized mother raised the prostrate form of her infant in her arms, and Mr. H. L. Rawlins, who was at hand, took it from her and carried it to Dr. Wm. Bayard, who _pro- nounced it fatally injured. Mr. R. C. Skin- ner drove after Mr. Rawlins with a carriage and brought the child te his office, where Dr. Botsford was called in, and where the child died in about twenty minutes. —Sun. or
