_Hatirax, Dec. 20.—Volunteers in this City are offering for earoliment in the contingent with far greater alacrity than on the oceasion of the raising of the first regiment. During three days this week Col. Irving, D. O. C,, has taken the names of 75m:n. They came trooping into his office from merning till night, and when met by tee statement that he has received no instruction to en- roll but that he will take their names, they eagerly asked that they be put on the list so that if there be any chance they might obtain a place in the proposed regiment. For every one tharcome for- ward when the first regiment was enrolled there aretwo now. A despatch from Sydney says seven members of the field battery there have volunteered,

Ersonton, N W T, Dec 12,—There is a strong teeling here in tavor of a North West contingent for Africa, made up of mounted plainsmen and mountaineers. A first class corps could be mustered. Col. Steel, who is aman of wide experi- ence, is spoken of asthe proper leauer. He has had years of experience on the plains, andin the Yukon, and has but to call for men and he would get thous- ands of rough riders, not only in Canada, but also from the neighboring states of Montana and Washington, who as riders, riflemen, packers and frontiersmen could not be surpassed, inured to exposure, and versed in the ways of the savage; able to ecout, to do outpost duty, to pack stores, they should prove an effective adjunct of the intelligence department of the army in
