Mr. Alfred S. Tait. Regional Director of Family Allowances. Charlottetown. announces that most families will today be re- ceiving increased cheques out of Federal Government funds as a result of the new rates which are effective this month. This is the only increase in payments since the first cheques were issued in the month of July. 1945. Prior to this month I-family Allowances were payable at the following rates, with increases effective in the month following the child's sixth. tenth and thirteenth birth- days:

Children under 8 years of age. 85 per month; Children from 6 until 10. 86 per month; Children from 10 until 13. 87 per month; Children from 13 until 16. 88 per month.

Family Allowances are now to be paid at the following rates: Children under 10 years of age. 86 per month; Children from 10 until 16, so per month.

Under the old rates of payment a parent would receive a total of 81188 on behalf of a child for the sixteen years whereas a par- am will now receive a total of 81298 until such time an the child reaches the age of is years. This represents an increase of 8108 in the actual amount re- celved by the parent during these 10 years.

The gross expenditure in Fam- ily Allowances payments In this province for " , b amounts to 8244.516 as compared to an expenditure of 8212.84: last month. thus making an increased expenditure of 321.673. The av- erage payment per family this month is 813.52 as compa ed to an average amount of 818.90 for the month of August. 1057.

In those cases where the registration form is not received in the Regional Di- rector's office within thirty days of the child's birth. payment of allowances commences with the month following the month when the registration form is re- ceived. Registration of a child for Family Allowances and reg- istration of a child's birth with the Provincial Vital Statistics authorities are two separate op- erations. In other words. birth registration does not constitute registration for Family Allow- ances.
