‘The Best of Charlottetown

The results are in. I'd like to quickly thank everyone who took the time to fill out one of our "Best of Charlottetown" forms (about two hun-

dred people in all). We couldn't have ~

asked for a better response. The answers were entertaining, and for the most part, well thought-out. Once again, thanks for your input. Without further ado, here are the results, as selected by the UPEI student popula- tion:

BEST BAR: The Wave. Yes, you heard it here first. UPEI's new campus bar has been accepted by the student population and managed to fin- ish top-spot in this category. A few people even,took:the time to explain what they like most about The Wave — Among the answers: "The Games Room" and "That boat-shaped thingy".

Baba's finished a close second

in the race to be named Charlottetown's best bar, and The 42nd Street Lounge was third. Myron's received one vote total — and the per-

son who voted for it spelled it Moron's.

BEST FAST FOOD: Wendy's. No surprise here. Wendy's ability to offer "healthier choices" to those look- ing for a quick snack, and the conven- ience of their two Charlottetown loca- tions, helped push them to the top. _

George's Grill finished a very, very close second. As far as the voting went for George's Grill, I don't think it had anything to do with "healthier choices", but probably more to do with a damn-good burger.

BEST PIZZA: Domino's and Pizza Delight. Yes, we had a tie in this category. It came right down to the wire, and in the end, nothing separated these two pizza-making giants.

J.R. Capone's managed to keep pace, for the most part, and finished in second place. The "Home of the Massive Slice" looked like it might have been on the way to victory, but in the end the small, locally-run business had to settle for second.

BEST GROCERY STORE: Sobey's. Good location. Good hours. Great bakery. Perhaps just a few of the reasons why Sobey's was able to beat out their one major competitor. Oh! Great taters, too. Can't forget the taters. :

No surprise, Superstore fin- ished second. Good location. Good

hours. Great bakery. Hmm... Maybe it _was the taters that made the difference.

BEST LAUNDROMAT: Mid- Town Laundromat and Café. Perhaps it is due to the fact that this particular Laundromat includes a café, or possi- bly, it has to do with its convenient hours and accessible location — Either

way, Mid-Town ran away with this cat-

egory.

"My Mom's place" finished in second place, which really tells you a lot about UPEI. And Prince Edward

- Island in general, I suppose.

BEST VIDEO*STORE: That's Entertainment. With the widest selec- tion of independent and foreign films in Charlottetown, it's easy to see what put this place over the top. That's Entertainment is the spot to look if you can't find a movie elsewhere, or if you feel like picking-up a flick that hasn't been whitewashed by Hollywood.

Jumbo Video took second place. The popcorn is pretty darn tasty at Jumbo. I'm thinking that probably had something to do with their good showing.

BEST MUSIC STORE: Back Alley Discs. Back Alley really ran away with this one. It wasn't even close. Back Alley is the only music store in North America where you can be serenaded by a man playing a bass while you browse. I think that this may have weighed heavily in their favour when it came time for people to cast their votes. A great selection of hard-to-find-anywhere-else-on-PEI music may have also added to their appeal.

Future Shop and Radioland finished tied for second.

BEST LOCAL BAND: Port Citizen. Another run-away winner.

This Charlottetown based band man-

aged to appear on more poll forms than any other nominee in any other catego- ty. That's a pretty big pat-on-the-back.

~~What'makes these*guys so popular

with the student population? It might have something to do with the fact that they play some fantastic original songs... And the best Police-covers ever. Period.

Just one little side note: for those of you who are confused, their name is Port Citizen, not Port Citizens.

BEST PROFESSOR: Anne Furlong. This English professor man- aged to win, what turned out to be, a

very close race. UPEI must be doing

. something right when you consider

that over twenty professors received votes in this category. Congratulations Dr. Furlong on being picked as the best-of-the-best.

Richard Lemm, David Weale, and Karem Simon tied for second place. Malcolm Murray and Judy Lynn Richards finished in third spot.

So, there you have it; The results of The Cadre's second ever, Best of Charlottetown Poll. Once again, thanks to those who took the time express their opinions — and thanks for not stealing our ballot box.
