West led the king of spades and continued with the queen, East playing high-low to show his doubleton. West realized that with normal defense the de- clarer would make the contract if, as seemed likely from the bidding, he had the K-Q-J of hearts, the ace of diamonds and king of clubs

So at trick three West led the three of spades, hoping that East would ruff with the seven of hearts, if he had it

Fast did have the seven, and obligingly played it. The result was that South had to lose two trump tricks instead of one. Ruffing with the seven was not a really hard play to make, but still East was entitled to some credit for showing signs of life with his dull hand.
