“THE CROPS IN MANITOBA.

Recent reports received by the director of the Experimental Farm from the sup- eriutendents of the branch farme in the Northwest and British Columbia, are most encouraging. Jn Manitoba, in tne early part of the season, the growth was retarded for want of moisture, but copious and time- ly showers since bave brought on a rapid growth. During the past tortnight graio has made great progress. The ~ weather bas been warm :nd seesonable, and the soil in a favorable condition of moisture. Wheat, oa's and barley are all well head~ ed out. In some districts in the northwest and southwest parts of Manitoba the gen- eral condition of the grain is scarcely up to the average; but in many other sec tions, especially in the large wheat~zrow - ing districts east of Brandon including the plains about Carberry and Portage le Prairie, grain looks remarkably well and promises good returns. ‘T'he dry weather in the early part of tbe season has resulted in a lighterop of bay. Roote and fodder corn are now growing very fast. In the district about lodian Head,in Eastern Axsiniboia, grain is growing very rapidly. The early part or the season was dry, but timely aud sbundant rains Lave given fav- orable cenditious of mowture and crops ot all sorts are now making a healthy anc

vigorous growth. The grain crops have been very good througheut this section of the country for the past two

years, and with another good crop and reavonably good prices, the outlook for agriculture | in this part of the Dominion is most promising, Ia British Co! umbia the hay crop is reported as verv good in ull perts of the province. The grain crops in most districts are healthy and vigorous and give promise of fatisfactory reiuros.

Roots and fodder crops are also growing well. In the coast climate, where large quantities of fruit are now produ:ed, the crop ot plums is very heavy, ihe reason has been generally f- vorable. The apple and pear trees blussumed very freely; but the fruit has not set very well and the crops of these fruits will probably be below the average. Sinall fruits are producinz abundantly.
