Rock salt isecoaomical, too and saves labor. Jt is now sold very cheap, and that fact ought to influence all to buy it in preference to the ordinary salt. It saves labor because, when ons or more Jumps are distributed in the pasturefiel, there necd not be so many trips made thither with salt fer the stock. A good sized lump will last a good while.
With the common salt, it ix, in many instanees, the rule to salt the cattle once a week, Sunday being very often the day selected. The stock at once gorge themselves on it, and scour, in cons.- quence, and it is nearly the cud of the week before they recov-r from tha effects, which are visible in reduced fl sh and lesser milk production. GETTING INTO SOCIETY,
Moment for the Plebian Rick Woman.
New York society is a very curious puzzle to strangers. The relative posi tious of the various factors that combine to make up the sum total bear no ex- trinsic relation to one another. To the outsider there is no especial reason why Mrs. S. should be among the very smart- est of the smart, and Mrs. Z. whose position is quite as good, who is quite as bright, if not brighter, and who may possess in a greater degree than her neighbor those qualities which go to make one desirable socially, is not of so fine a position. It seems inexplicable. We have these types, and very strongly marked, as any careful observer will agree. ‘lhe disturbances in relative ‘‘values” (to use an artistic term) that is caused by the introduction of a new element among so delicately balanced an organization is very interesting.
I had a chance not long ago to witness the initation of such a factor. The lady is ot vast wealth and of very recently acquired prominence. For some months everybody has known that she was a “coming” woman. socially speaking. A ball was given by one of her social sponsers, a veteran of the “grand armee,” a leader whose positiou is re cognized on two sides of the Atlantic. For a twelvemonth she has guided the course of her protegee as a skilled chess player directs the movements of his

Ina brief word the presentation was made, whereupon Mrs. Awiul Smartset extended her exclusive hand in cordial grasp and exclaimed with real effusiveness: “My dear Mrs. Manyplunketts, I can't tll you how charmed J am to meet you. Sick Room Suggesitons.
How few women really know what constitutes good nursing. When they move about a sick room, they either do itin a stesIthy, tiptoe sort of fashion that is quite enough to drive a nervous person frantic, for they indulge in a tread that shakes to its very foundation the bed of the invalid. The most lov- ing care and anxious thought is often ata discount, for good nursing is an art, a heaven-~born gift, that is often lacking in even the best of trained nurses.
It is a most artistic work to prepare a dainty cup of tea and dish ot toast. Nine out of every ten women who at- tempt this delicate task fail signally, the tea being too often half co'd and either too strong or too weak, and so de- luged with sugar that even the most ro- bust might protest. As for the toast, the keen eyes of the invalid quickly detect the sligntest scorch that may linger about the edges.
“There is an opening for some wo- man,” said a trained nurse in a recent ossip On sick room methods, “in mak- ing to order tempting’ broths, beef tea, custards, invalid delicacies, in fact. that could be relied upon for their whole- someness and genuine home-made qualities. A woman with a natural ap- titude for cooking could soon perfect herself in the creation of invalid foods, and by getting some well-known phy- sician as her patron she might supply his patients with such dainties as he ad- vised. Many a home have I been in where the weary housewife would have gladiy given orders for articles which. in the worry and flurry of nursing, home folks had little chance to pre- pare.”
So here’s a hint for the ‘*born cook’ anxious to add to her meagre piu money. Let her hang out her little shing'e bearing the unique notice ‘‘In valid Caterer.” Haven't the least doubt her business would soon be a tell- ing oue.—Philadelphia Inquirer,
