The Funeral Arrangements.

DESCRIPTION OF THE CASKET.

Ortawa, June 8.

The Premier died at 10.15 on Saturday night, and the sad intelligence was pub- lished by the tolling of the city fire-alarm bell.

The streets were crowded, and great ex- citement ensued.

Sir John’s body has been embalmed. His features are most life-like, excepting forthe pallor of his cheeks. The face shows little trace of illness, although the body is somewhat wasted, A plaster cast of the face has been taken by Hamilton McCarthy, the sculptor.

The body les in state to-day at Earns- cliffe. To-morrow morning it will be tak- en to the Senate Chamber, where it will lie in state until Wednesday, at 1 o’eleck,

when it will be taken to St. Alban’s Church. Thence it will be taken by rail to Kingston. From Wednesday night unt 1!

Thursday at noon the remains will lie in state in Kingston Oity Hall, after which the body will be buried beside his parents, his firat wife, his brothers and two sisters.

Both Commons and Senate chambers will be appropriately draped.

In the great dining hall at Earnscliffe the remains of its late master lie this morning, The casket rests upon a pedestal in the centre of the room, and ail the appoint- ments are most imposing. The hangings are of violet and white. These arrange- ments took till nearly midnight to com- plete, and when all was done the metallic casket with its precious burden was carried down stairs from the room in which the lamented premier passed away, and placed upon a catafalque there.

There the remains will lie until to- inorrow morning w be viewed by the mem- bers of the sorrowing household and a few personal friends, including the members of the Cabinet, who will call at Evxruslcliffe to-day.

So far Lady Macdonald has borne up bravely, but the strain upon her endurance has been incenceivably severe.

Tne casket in which all that is mortal cf the departed states- man lies is of relied steel finished in rose- wood graining, with a silver rod extending the full length alongside. It has a full glass top, and the cover is bound along the edges with solid silver im the form of wreathed leaves. The lifting panels are fastened with silver knubs, the lifts them- aclves being in the shape of a wheel surrounded by a psir of folded wings. The interior of the coftia is upholstered in satin of the finest white, and fastened with silk cords. The shell in which the casket is to) be enclosed before being lowered into the grave is of plain oak polished and finished with svlid silver handles,

At Kingston the casket will be closed and hermetically sealed.

The Dominion Methodist Church here was heavily draped yesterday, and Sir John’s death was the one theme in all the Churches. 3
