The Irish Secret Society. | Lonvon, Nov. 20. | ‘The Standard publishes a lengthy letter |from a correspondent, whose good faith it | states to be beyond question, who professes to be a member of an American Irish Secret Society, and who says: “lt is a cruel | tyranny. Once the oath is taken a member | surrenders his liberty and spies attend his jevery step.” He goes on to tell there are 228 men now under him getting $13 a week. | These men get their orders from the head of the society and no one knows the others business. He says a greater movement is | now on foot than ever before attempted.

Rome, Nov. 20.

Yesterday, while the Communal Council was Giscussing a motion in favor of entrust- ing the priest with religious instructions in municipal schools, a crowd burst into the room and commenced whistling and hoot- /hooting. The greatest disorder prevailed, but the hall was finally cleared and the dis- cussion resumed with closed doors. Several arrests were made.

At the Stipendia'y Magistrate’s Court this forenoon, John McPherson appeared on charge of breaking into the store of Mr, J. H. Myrick. The evidence of Mr. John Crovket and of Mr. Peter Reiley was heard, and the prisoner was further remanded. An assault case and two drunks were disposed of.

AN eXplosion which might have been at- tended by serious results occurred in the office of Dra. Bagnall and Robins yesterday, The vulcanizer which is heated by lamps increased its steam quicker than vsual, and while both Doctors were absent from the work room, and at work in their respective offices, fit exploded, breaking the lamps, bursting a hole’ in the ceiling and filling the apartment with steam. Fortunately no great damage was done.

Tue barque ‘‘Gulnare,” Capt. William Me- Donald, owned by Hon. L. C, Owen, on pas- sage from Little Grace Bay to Havana, with a cargo of coal, arrived in Cariboo Cove on Tues- day. Captain McDonald reports that his ship struck on the bar when leaving Little Grace Bay, andon Friday he experienced a heavy gale, during which the vessel shipped a heavy sea which carried off and deowned the mate and one man. The sea also carried away the wheel, binvacle, and did other damage to the vessel,

Tue Scorr Acr Peririon.—The Pioneer says the list of names on the petition for repea of the Scott Act in Prince County has been published by the Temperance Alliance here. The total is 1,260, some of which appear twice, and a very large proportion are ‘‘his-mark” signatures. Mr. Robert Hardy collected 937 names, and of these 327 (over 4) are signed by anx. This showing is we hope not a fair criterion of the literary status of our prov- ince, The extraordinary proportion of mark names may be accounted for by the nature of the petition. If the prayer of the petition be grante’, we hope that voters will consider what they do before casting their ballots.

Extradition.

An extradition treaty which has been concluded between Roumania and Monaco recognizes attempts upon the lives of sovereigns as common law offences, and provides that the assassins shall be extra- dited in the usual manner,

Wreck of an Unknown Ship.

Norru Syoney, Nov. 20. The operator at Meat Cove reports that the only clue to the identity of the lost ship there is a plank marked ‘*Miramichi” and five letters of a name which read ‘‘Noril.” He saw two dead bodies but could not ecure them.

A Chinaman who landed from a steamer at Victoria, B. C., on Saturday, was found to have a carpet bag full of dynamite cart- ridges. He is believed to be a Fenian in disguise. Protecting the Queen. A Nove. Rossrry.—A despatch from Me- Comb, Ohio, says:—‘‘An old Methodist church has stood on the land of J. C. ‘Smith for many years, Recently Smith sold his real estate to D R. Wells, The church was not included in the property, but was sold toa relative, Israel Smith, who moved the structure one dark night, when Wells was away from home, to his own premises acrossthe street. Wells was furious, and claimed that the church was his property. He brought suit against Smith, charging him with theft. The case was decid- ed in the Court of Common Pleas. Smith was compelled to pay a fine of $100 and costs, besides paying Wells for the church. _——_— a re a!
