It could hardly be regarded of the Class of Canada vs. U.S.S.R. hockey games but the Panthers and Dalhousie Tigers put on an exciting hockey game Sunday at Varsity Arena. Neither team was too sure of what they were going to‘do when they got the puck, but somehow they managed to get the job done. Goal- tending played an impor- tant role in the game as it always does. Steve Van Diest played an excellent game for the Panthers as he blocked 37 of 39 shots fired at him. However his opposite in the Dal nets Brian Walsh was not quite as good as he allowed 5 goals on 47 shots. He handled high shots quite well but anything along the ice gave him fits. Four of the five goals scored against him were directly along the ice. Also he had difficulty uncovering the angles as two goals were scored on the long side shots taken from the blueline.

It was wide open free- wheeling hockey all through the game as both teams used the body quite liber- ally. Luc Bedard and Don Murghan playing together for the first time on defense handed out so many bone-crunching checks it was hard to keep count of them. _ ,

Whatever you though of the game, the score left little doubt as to whom was the best team. The

Panthers outskated and outhustled the Tigers all throhgh the game.

The Panthers opened the scoring in the first period on a weird goal by Gene Power. Power fired a shot that missed the net. Bill Walsh, the \ Tiger goaltender, turned to catch the puck, but instead managed to knock it into the net with his stick glove.

Greg McCullough tied the score later in the period as he beat Van Diest on a two on one break.

At 15:13, Jack Mac Eachern gave the Panthers the lead for good as he beat walsh on a drive along the ice from the

lip of the crease.

That's the way the per- iod ended with the Panthers leading 2 5 l.

Micheal Paiement broke the game wide open in the sandwich session as he scored two early goals.

His first came at 1:38 as he fired a shot from 60 feet out that caught the long corner on Brian Walsh. His second goal came a few minutes later from a scramble in front of the Dal net.

Eric Cameron narrowed the margin to two goals when he beat Van Diest on a rebound flipped over the fallen netminder. The score at the end of the second period was 4 — 2 for the Panthers.

Gordie Beck put the game out of reach in the third as he scored the final goal of the game on a long slap shot.

There were 13 penalties handed out by Referee Joe Coyle with the Panthers picking up seven of them.

This ran the Panthers -record to 2 wins and one

tie giving them undisputed possession of first place in Division II of the A.R.H.L.

So come see our Panthers next Friday at 7 and Saturday at 2 as they host the U.N.B. Red Bombers.

BASKETBALL

The Panthers journeyed to Machais, Maine last weekend to play in an annual tournament hosted by Machias, Maine. In the first game, the Pan- thers played the Machias Clippers in a rough and tumble battle. The Panthers came out on top by a score of 85 - 65.

In the second game against University of Maine at Presque Isle,

a combination of height and discipline led the opposition to a 91 — 66 victory. A hard fought game all the way, the Panthers found them— selves in early foul trouble and couldn't play the kind of de- fense that wins games.

After the champion— ship game, an All Star team was selected which found Bill Robertson and Andy Packard recipients of trophies. The Pan— thers now hold a 5 - 2 pre-season record and journey to Dalhousie and St. F.X. this coming weekend - hopefully to boost their record to 7 — 2. These games will be the first league games for the Panthers so wish them the best of luck!!
