A Wonderful Bedstead.

A wonderful bedstead lately finished in Puris for an Indian Prince, is

described as follows:—It is partly made of real silver,and cost many thousands of pounds sterling. At each

corner stands a beautiful figure holding

a delicately constructed fan. On the great potentate getting into bed the weight of his body sets certain machines in mution, the effect of

which is, that so long as his royal high- ness enjoys his peacfal slumbers. Ifthe figures atthe footof the bed are required to exert themselves in a like manner,this can be accomplished by the aid of a clock-like apparents. Moreover, should the dusky owner of the bed wish to be lulled to slumber by the duleet sounds of soft music, this can be done by touching a spring. The bottom of the bed contains a large musical box, which 18 so arranged that the tues can be loud or soft, as desired. The Irish Problem. A DECLARATION OF POLICY FROM A CAB- INET OFFICER.

Mr. Joseph Chamberlain, President of the Board of Trade, in a speech at Wolverhampton recently, said: The members of the Government are firmly united. All are pursuing the same general object, and all are animated with equal loyalty to the great chiet. It is the bounden duty ofthe Liberal party todo its utmost to remove just causes of discontent and disaffection. It must vo looger tolerate such ashame, fraud and trasparent imposture as the present Irish parliamentary representa- tion system, where one in twenty-five has a vote. The perpetuation of this injustice would jusitfy disaffection, give the leaders of the Irish party the strepgest arguments fora separation, as showiog that it was impossible to obtain justice from the British Parlia- ment, ani give fresh vigor to the agita- tion which it is to our interest to allay.

The conference room of the Baptist Ministers’ Association was filled a few days ago,many ladies being among those present. The attraction was Miss Adele Fields, who has beén for the past twenty years & missionary to China. She gave an interesting aceouat of the progress of Christian work among the heathen, especially among the women of China. In answer to questions by the clergymen present, she said that. -the Chinese had no idea of what sin meant until after they were made to under- stand God and salvation by the cross. They are not devoid of eonsience, but believe that they are sinless if they do not commit acrime forbidden by the law. The women consider a vegetarian diet sufficient penance for wrong-doing. The universal crime of infanticide is practised by the mother, who drown their female iofants within an hour after their birth. They consider it a deed of mercy, and they only become aware of the sin of such actions after becoming Christians, “The hardest thing to teach them,” Miss Fields said, ‘ie that lying is sinful. Even after years of teaching they cannot understapd that it is a8 wicked to tellan untruth for a good end as for a bad one. There was & woman who travelled with moe for years, and when I would sometimes be- come fatigued and lie down to rest she would an that I was not at home.” The lady visitors at the Con- ference appeared to appreciate this, as well as the doctors of divinity, for there Was a geuerai laugh.
