A rew days ago we called attention to the manure nuisance on the St. Peter’s Road. To-day we received complaints of a like nature from persons obliged to pass along the Mal peque Boad between this city and the College. The heaps of manure which dis- tigure the roadside opposite the Bishop's vineyard give off an odour terrible in its offensiveness and ought to be removed at once,

By last night’s mail the Island clergy and lay representatives of the Diocesan Synod of Nova Scotia received the formal notice from the Archdeacon of the special meeting of the Synod for the purpose of electing a successor to the late Bishop Binney. The Synod will be held in St. Luke’s Cathedral Church on Wednesday, the 6th July and will be immediately preceeded by a cele- bration of Holy Communion at 9.30.

APPALLING LOSS OF LIFE.

A special officer fiom Lres (Sunday), with despat ches, says that while the first reports after the first shock were exaggerated the loss of life is appalling. The towns of Arespe and Opata were completely destroy- ed, and forty people are buried in the ruins. Other towns are greatly damaged.

Despatches report a slight earthquake at Eureka, Cala, Rhonesville, Cala, and San- buena Ventura. There was no damage.

Monster Strike.

Cuicaco, May 13.

To-night all building operations under the control of contractors who are members of the Master Masons Association shut down so far as the bricklayers and stone- masons are concerned. It is estimated that fully ten thousand workmen aré now idle in the building trade of the city, as a result of the strikes or lockout. The general shut down inaugura- ted this evening is the outgrowth of a series of strikes in the building trades, and is an attempt by the employers to force a battle royal with the workmen and secure lasting peace during the season.

The Ocean King. San Francisco, May 13.

A despatch to the merchants exchange from Fort Townsend, W. T., states that all the crew of the Ocean King, which was burned and abandoned off the Oregon coast last Sunday, has arrived at that port.
