Tue PHILHARMONIC Society Concert.—QOa | Tuesday evening and Thursday afternoon very | successful practices fur *‘The Creation” were held by the Philuarmonic Society, and it is hoped that the Oratorio will be very satis- factorily rendered at the approaching concert. Most of the choruses of this Oratorio possess elements of powerful grandeur, which are perfectly soul-stirring, when effectually ren- dered by a large number of voices.

Pouice Covurt.—This morning, William Dadier was convicted of a first offence against the C. T. Act and ‘fined $50 or one month's im- prisonment. Two other Scott Act cases were dismissed, and three adjourned. Oae drunk was fined $2 or eight days. Norman Valley, an old offender, was given six months im- prisonment with hard labor for the larceny of a quantity of provisions from a couatry- man.

Wixpow Breakinc.—Two men had a squabble on Queen Street this forenoon, and one threw a stone at the other. In- stead, however, of hitting the object aimed ac, the stone went through one of the large plate glass panes in the window of Messrs. E. H. Norton & Co's. store. The police were notified, but when they arrived the man was not to be seen.

Virgil Maxey, a noted revivalist and Baptist min- ister, that he will go on the stage on Sep- tember Ist. Maxey states that his object is to unite the pulpit and the stage. He will be on the stage six days in the week, and preach on Sunday. He is a nephew of ex-United States Senator Maxey.

Some of the best judges of horses on this Island, including Veterin- ary Surgeon Fraser, have been to see it and they all say they never saw 4 foal built for strength and speed asshe is) She is jet black, with a little white on hind feet and nose. There are a lot of his foals dropped this spring, all of which are Jet black with perfect build for strength and speed.

Taf OsbORNE Hovse.—Mr. P. P. Archi- bald, the new proprietor of the Osborne House, is evidently determined to make that

He has had the in- terior of the bu lding painted, whitened and otherwiee improved, and most of the bedrooms have been newly papered. The parlors, re- ception room, dining room and bedrooms have all been fitted up and furnished through outin excellent style. All the furniture is new and was maie to order. The carpet used in the parlors, etc., as well as in almost all the bedrooms, is Brussels of a very pretty pattern. In short, all the appointments are first-class, and amply sufficient for the most fastidious. We sincerely trust that Mr. Ar- chibald’s enterprise will meet with the success

A report has reached here of a wreck on the Ohio River railroad between here and Parkersburg. A special of two cars filled with Baltimore and Ohio officials, en route to Wheeling, went through the trestle. A special train with surgeons and Associated Press reporters has left for the scene.

Heavy Embezzlement. 3RIDGEPORT, Conn., June 5d.

Several months ago, Legrand G. Beers, a young lawyer. doing business in New York, visited his home and secured a large amount of money from his brother and sister. Two wealthy neighbors, the proprie- tor of the Church Record, Southport, and others represented that he would invest it in mortgages in Brooklyn, paying lerze dividends. lt is expected that his embez- zlements will reach nearly $80.000. It is thought he has gone to Canada.

Strike of Shvemakerss.

Haverty, Mass., June 5.

Two hundred operatives employed in the shoe factory of J. H. Winchell & Co. came out on strike at. six o’cluck to-night, by order of the boot and shoe workers’ inter- national union. The grievances alleged were refusal of the firm to adopt the union card system inthe cutting room, and pay standard prices to all cutters employed, as agreed upon with the union about a month ago,

Trouble With indians.

A special to the Evening W isconsin, from Shawano, (Wis.) says that 1500 Indians, armed with Winchester rifles on the Monominee Reservation, have driv- en the Indian agent off, and trouble is fear- ed.
