The Public Accounts for 1879.

Tue Public Accounts of the Province, for the year 1879, were laid on the table of the House this afternoon. Although a balanee of $14,985.64 appears against the Province at the closs of the year, yet the following synopsis of the Accounts, as com- pared with the two preceding years, will we are sure, convince every reasonable man tliat the present Government have done their part well, during the part of the year in which they contrelled public affairs. [t appears, from the Auditor's Report (page 111) that no less than $60,071.95 were left unpaid of the expenditure of furmer years ; and that the sum ef $43,679.23 has been paid, during the year, on capital account, for construction of Lunatic Asylum, of which 335,408.62 was for work done during the year.

We will not, however, to-day, enter fur- therinto the discussion of the accounts, leaving the following comparative state- ment, fer the last three years, to speak for themselves. We shall deal, first, with pay- ments which may be classed as ancontrell- able expenditure.

The amalga- mation of certain offices, and the sweeping reductions made all reund, have produced results similar to the above in every branch of the service, and will, no doubt, tell with much greater fores on the expenditure of the current year. Turning to the other side ef the accounts, it will be seen that all these retrenchments are absolutely necessary. The manner in which the public business has been conducted may, in some measure, be gleaned from these accounts.
