East Side Story - Squeeze

, Severalyears ago, English band emerged "from the punk/nan wave scene that sounded a lot 1 like the Beatles. Today, Squeeze is still being compared to the Fab Four but - unlike other - 'Beatle Sound 'a'likes - _ the carparison' is for all of the right reasons. These guys go beyond merely sounding like the Beatles - theyalso show, orginality and tremendous potential. .

This is the group's fourth album (previous ‘ l.p.. 's : U.K.Squeeze, 0001 For Cats, and Argybargyi 'and the first to meet with any degree of success in North ' America. The success of

East Side Stog can partly attr ' uted to the band's recent tour eith

the album's co—producer, Elvis Costello.

was consistently more witty and clever. Still,‘ East Side Story is-better than 90% of what passes for music these days. For example, Glenn Tilbrook's description of a woman putting on make-up is harshly standard fare: ' "She paints her nails on the bat-broom Scales/ ~ Gargles her breath like

a landed whale/ Her . beauty is as deep as her skin] She keeps her eyebrows in a tipaccle tin." This bit of wit

is from "Vanity Fair",

'a tune in which Tilbrook

sounds amazingly like the John Iennon of 15 years ago. '

"In Quintessence" is a catchy, bouncy bit of pop, reminiscent of

"Another Nail In My Heart" ‘-

from their previous album. The former is the L.P.Ls opening cut and should have been the hit single. Instead Squeeze . opted to release "Tempted

Elvis Costello's prints are all over some .cfthe tunes, namely "Piccadilly" and "Heaven". Costello had a hand in all of the songs except "In _ Quintessence" which was produced by Dave Edwards (late "of Rockpile) .

Shake It Up — The Cars

It took four albums but the Cars have finally proven that-they are Never has a band been on the brink of stardom and flirted with it so frivolously. Their debut album featured some clean, basic and catchy rock'n' roll. The l.p. earned them (for what it's mrth) the designation of Best New Group of 1979 from American music

' critics .

What transpired between 1979 and 1981 has all been bad as far as the Cars are concerned. They can be excused for the mediocre gang.

But then came Panorama. now, Shake It Up - more of the same. That is to say, more of nothing.

Ric Ocasek "writes" the band's materials and shares leas vocals with Benjamin Orr. They're still grunting about the same things - sex, girls, and more sex. Of course the Cars aren't the only band who can be accused of this sort of thing. It's just that they seem to actually take them- selves seriously.

In any case, I 'm sure the Cars will continue to be pOpular with anyone of puberty age or under, which may be the group's whole marketing strategy in the first place.

In a way I hate to dump on the band like

this because when I first heard them I thought

they were great ("Just what I needed" is still one of the best songs to come out of the last few years). Maybe I'm just getting old.
