SPRING PROSPECTS.

'- Tue tenth of June this year will find few of our fields unseeded—except those in- tende! for turnips—and the period of growth and fructification well begun. It 18 too soon, or course, to look for prospects of grain crops. In respect to them much may happen that will effect the results, But the prospect of an excellent crop ot hay seems to be,feven now, assured, The catch of clover all over the country could bardly be better than it is, though there might of course be more of it, and timothy is strong,—the whole so covering the ground as to make a period of dry weather of little consequence, in this regard, to those farmers whose fields are in good condition. Dairying is beginning to tell upon the fertility the fields, as well as upon the herds of cattle and the purses of those who have engaged in it. A larger quantity of better manure has in recent years been put upon the lands of our more advanced settlements and less good soil has been taken out of the land in the sbape of oats and potatoes shipped away. The result is seen in the richer sheen of our meadows aod in heavier crops.

Farmers who have orchards are also rejoiciug in the prospect of a bountifal return to make up for the lapse of last year. There never was a fuller bloom than that which now appears, and unless there should be a disastrous change of weather we shall this year have, alarge crop of fruit. At present epring is witb us, full of sweet days acd roses and hopes of a good returo for the labors of our husband- men,

—Senator Ferguson and all the Domin- ion electors in this Province are to be congratulated on the adoption of the Sev- ate amendments tothe Franchise Bil! by the House of Commons.

—The Federal government, at the end of the session, and for causes akin to those alleged by the Minister of Marine to have effected the head vf an officer in Nova Scotia to wit, “his brother was an offen sive partizan,” have dismissed the effi- cient Collector of Customs at Alberton, and replaced him by a red hot heeler, whose only qualitication is “offensive partizanship.” Verily this is hypocrisy reduced to ascience. Collector Brennan goes out of office with a good record; he will not wait long to come into his own again.

—Some of Spain’s papers -ee how events are tending in respect to Spain: ‘hus the Madrid El Heraldo, jwith regard to the situation at Santiago de Cuba, says : — “ It is one more disenchantment which proves that there is no remedy for Spain’s misfortunes. Cervera’s squadro. at San- tiago is of little advantage, either to itself or for what itrepresents. It can neither hinder the Yankee expedition nor strengthen the defence of Havana. Spain never before led through such a straight road to perdition. ”

—The authenticity of the letter of Sir Wil/rid Laurier, Premier of Canada, to Cardinal Rampolla, has not been denied, — though no affirmation concerning it can by any means be obtained. This letter reveals the two faced character of the Liberal leader. Itis, he says, “‘confi- ential.” While intriguing to neutralize the influence of the Bishops of Canada by trying to persuade the Pope to send Monsignor Merry Del Vai here aa his deleg- ate to Keep them in order, he would pcse before the Potestants of Qn'ariaas the iiapartial statesman anxious alone for the preservation of Canadian rights. Verily, Sir Wilfrid Laurier is a crafty man, and Tarte is at his elbow.

—At the Sir John Macdonald commem- oration meeting held in Toronto on the 6th inst., Mr. Nicholas k'lood Davin said that “iv the life of Sir Joho Macdonald there was an example of a career worthy of the study and emulation of young men. A poor lad in Kingston, he had keen put into a law office without the advantages of a@ university educatien; yet he had risen tothe pinnacle of fame. ‘Surmounting all difficulties, be had risen to the highest pcsition in Canada and left behird him an example of perseverance and power such as might well be held before the young that they might imitstethem,and make the man a@ pattern to govern their destiny. He was @ man such that posterity would not willingly let his memory die.”

But the Gleaner has no cause to be pessimistic concerning the leaders of the Party in the

other Provinces. In Nova Scotia and New Brunswick and Quebec and Oatario, as well as io Manitoba and British Columbia aad the Northwest territories, the Liberal Conservative party leaders are evidently superior to the men who organized the Scandalous intrigue through which the liberal Party gained power. “Eminence,—I made known to you, in the mooth of August last, when your Eminence did me tue nonor to grant me an audience, the happy result which the mission of Monseigneur Merry del Val had acc. mplished among the Catholics of Ca- pada, and the profound ‘expression whieh his high Christian virtues and his talent as a statesman-—I say statesman, and the impression is not too etrong—had created io all classes of our population.

Having now returned to my country for several months, [ wieh to make known to your Eminence that, if these happy resuits are to remain permanent and efficacious itis desirable, if not necessary, that the mission of Mouseigneur Merry del Val should be renewed, or rather continued, and that he should be present in the midst of us fora more or less prolonged time us the accredited repre entative of the Holy See.
