Still she ran on, ran until her breath came in gasps and she sank down on a fallen tree trunk, amid the startled stillness of the virgin forest.

She followed the flight, of the brld with her eyes and saw it light on the branches of a short stocky tree near the clearing There it sat for a moment sud then flew to the ground and began pecking industrousiy at something under- neath the tree.

"Melons on a tree," she said aloud. "I wonder if this is something we could eat."

She poked tentatively at the rind and then tried to bite lute the "melon." Her mouth was filled with ran starchy flesh and she hastily salt it out. "Doesn't taste much like a melon." she reﬂected. "Still, it mus: be something edible or the birds wouldn't come here."
