“GOLD IN A DUST HEAP.”
‘‘A gad case has occurred in the poor parish of St. M ’s in our metropolis. The body of a man was found ina small garret, where he had evidently died of starvation, having been too honest to steal, and too proud to beg.”
Such was the paragraph which made me start up from my easy chair by the fire one April morning, and call out the name of my wife who was in the next room.
‘Mary, my dear!”
The truth was, that morning I had}
had a domestic grumble. My break- faust had not been quite to mg mind ; had grumbled at the cook, and when

turned upon her and said I did not know how it was she managed so badly with the house-keeping money. It was true we were not rich--but other men in my position had things better done.
Well, I will spare myself, reader ; perhaps you know already whata man is like who has not enjoyed his break- fast and has a bad temper.
And then I sat down,and reading my paper I saw the above paragraph.

But what brought it more forcibly to my mind was that my old chum, Can- field, was the vicar of this very parish, and moreover that I was going up to town to pay him a long-promised three- days’ visit.
Mary entered as I looked up. Isaw there was a slight red tinge round her dear eyes.
‘Mary, | was a brute justnow! Of course you know it was all nothing, my breakfast was not all bad, and really, looking around, I don’t know any one who has such s comfortably managed home as l have. And how’s baby this morning dear?’ I forgot to ask. Mind you have a cup of nice hot coffee at eleven,'and don’t bother about my port- manteau, I will see tothat; and I shall only stay with Canfield two nights, my dear.’
I need not put in all the pretty things Mary said, having given my repentance | in full; but she was always the angel of our house.
Somchow all the way up town that paragraph haunted me. I had thought so much of Canfield, and here he was letting a man starve under his very eyes in his own parish.
I had not been long at the parsonage before I mentioned my story, though I added, half in apology for my tone of reproof :
‘Your house my dear fellow, doesn’t look very far from pauperism—no ¢ar- pets, no sofas no comforts.
My own home was a2 palace in com. parison.
‘Ah, I saw that strange paragraph, too,’ he answered, in what I deemed a most unfeeling tone; and [ went on.
‘But it was in your parish. Really, Canfield, in old days you were more tender-hearted.’
He turned upon me with a fuce so full of unfathomable expression that I paused.
‘God knows, Dick, if I could I would lay down my life for the least of my flock! But I don’t knew them all—I can’t. What is a man todo with twelve thousand souls under his care? And as to money—well, you see I don’t waste it here, but all I can save is as a drop in the ocean, and hardly that even.’
He paused, and then he added, ‘ But I have left an hour free to receive you. Will you come withme? We will find the place where the poor man died. I have not had amoment before to spare from the living to seek out the dead.’
For the second time that day I was rebuked, and followed in silence ; but after hearing that man speak, and see- ing his life during those three days, I never afterwarjs accused him of iadif- ference. He was a very Moses plead- ing with God for his people.
We passed through narrow streets, out of which went narrow passages, leading into alleys and courts still more dirty and stuffy—dens of wickedness they seemed to me. Canfield threaded his way to one still more crowded and squalid than the rest.
‘It must be here, I think,’ co said. ‘Come, Dick, follow me clo e; these people don’t care much aboui seeing yoyr fine clothes.’
Ile knew some of them, and spoke kindly and pleasantly to them, and so gently to the children that—was I pro- fune?—-there scemed to me something npostolic about the man.
At last we stopped, and he asked which had been Mr. Beales’s house.
A siatternly woman pointed two doors off, and we knocked.
The door was opened by a rough- haired, bright-eyed girl of about six- teen; but there was nothing girl-like in her face, so knowing and cute was the. look she gave ur.
